I think it is past time. Which one should I get the new G400 or the G500?

    Definitely the Logitech G500:

    (1) The Logitech G500 is a superior mouse, with better specs and adjustable weights.
    (2) The Logitech G500 is available today. The Logitech G400 is pre-order only.
    (3) The Logitech G500 is cheaper at the moment ($35 shipped, if you order today): Link to post

Why bother upgrading? The MX518 is a top-notch mouse with one of the best optical sensors out there. I'm willing to bet 1,800 DPI is functionally more than enough, unless you play with ridiculously high sensitivity (i.e. less than 3 inches for a 360 degree rotation).

My left mouse button does not work consistantly, and the right is degraded, that is why I have to replace the MX518 with another mouse.
Isn't the G400 due out on the 19th of this month?

Rumor has it, that it is.

But I would seriously wait until a deal comes out for either the Logitech G400 or G500. Sales / rebates come out all the time on Logitech mice... (the Logitech G500 has been on sale for $35 once every few weeks for the past several weeks). There is absolutely no reason to pay retail price for a Logitech mouse.

If your mouse buttons don't click on your MX518 I'd recommend opening it up and cleaning it out. There are two screws at the top of the underside of the mouse and one at the bottom. Once you remove all the gunk out of your mouse, it should click like it used to. I've been using my MX518 2005 and had to clean it out last year.

^I also recommend another MX518. It's so cheap, and its optical sensor is better than many of the high-DPI laser sensors used in more modern mice.

You might also want to take a look at the Razer DeathAdder; it's pretty much the counterpart to the MX518; relatively inexpensive with a top-notch optical sensor, 5 buttons and a comfortable shape. The current version has 3,500 DPI, which might be a nice upgrade from your MX518.

I am thinking about opening it up. The deathadder has forward and backward buttons similar to the MX518?

I would normally just buy another Logitech mouse, but maybe the Deathadder would be better to try over the G500?

Entirely your call. If there's a Best Buy near you, check it out; they often have a bunch of these mice on display so you can get a feel for what you like best.

Wherever you decide to buy, make sure you get it from somewhere that has a good return policy. A mouse is such a personal device that what might feel nice in the store makes your hand cramp up after hours of use.

Also, when you do find one you like, make sure you hold on to the receipt in case of a warranty issue. If you have the one for your MX518 and it's less than 3 years old, Logitech would send you a brand new one and would either 1) pay for your shipping the bad one back to them or 2) just tell you to keep the bad one and not bother sending it back.

This is the primary reason why I stick with Logitech mice - should something go amiss, they're very responsive to warranty claims. You just need to make sure you hold on to your receipt as proof. After that, it's smooth sailing.

My local BB had no mice of any worth available from trying out and the mice for sale were spread out over a wall.
I may put the MX518 away and buy the Razer from Amazon. i suppose I could return if there were problems?

Yes, Amazon would be a good place to buy a mouse from, for two reasons:

    1) They have a very good return policy. So if you don't like it, you can return the product, with no restocking fee.

    2) The often offer free shipping on the products they sell. It is always good to buy a product that has free shipping, if there is a chance you might return it, because: If you return a product that is $45 + $0ship, then you get a refund on the $45. If you return a product that is $40 + $5ship, then you get a refund on the $40.

+rep to saturnoku for awesome advice in his post.

I third the MX518, if it worked for you and if you like it there is little reason to look elsewhere. I have 2 mx518 one on my desktop and one in my laptop, and bought another 2 when they were $25 to replace them in time.

Lol. Man, you definitely have your eye set on the Logitech G400.

If you want it, buy it, and forget what anyone else says. What matters in the end is that you are happy with your purchase.

In that case, try out the DeathAdder. It's $45 on Amazon, cheaper than pretty much anywhere else, and they have a good return policy if you don't like it. :)

the G400 is meant to be like a direct upgrade from the MX518, the G500 has a slightly different shape, and more features (obviously since it is higher catergory of mouse) The G500 more resembles the G5 than the 518

I just had a look at the G400...it sure does look like a good successor to the MX518. I'm amused by the way Logitech likes to one-up Razer when they come out with new stuff...Razer came out with the Mamba at 5,600 DPI, Logitech made the G700 at 5,700. Razer updated the DeathAdder to 3,500 DPI, now the G400 has 3,600. I bet Logitech's next laser mouse is going to have 6,500 :p

I just bought the g700 like 2 hours ago. Haven't had much time with it but its sooo much better then my m310. Comfortable for palm grip and i love the scroll wheel. I don't think ill get the 2 month battery life out of it but its defiantly worth the 80$ i spent on it

I'd hardly call that a major issue unless you do a lot of file transfers within your network. I highly doubt your Internet connection is fast enough to saturate a 160Mpbs wireless network :p
