Hey all,
I'm currently using the logitech G5 Laser Mouse. I like it and all, but I got it over a year ago and was wondering if there was a substantial upgrade to it yet.
What I'm looking for:
Laser Mouse
3+ extra buttons (not counting right/left and no middle button please)
non-wireless (causes excess lag imo, and I hate replacing batteries)
No trackballs
preferably weighted

The only thing's that I am aware of that are better than it would be the wired G9 which would probably be decent for you since you're used to the shape. It has 5 buttons, 3200dpi, laser, and a tilt wheel, and its got a weight cartridge like the G5. Unless you're really jonesing for a new mouse though, I don't think it's a too terribly substantial upgrade, but it may be enough to be worth your while.
On the flip side though, I personally upgraded from a G5 to a Razer Lachesis and have never looked back. It took a while to get used to the shape and feel of it but now it feels great. Double the dpi of a G5 at 4000DPI really feels like it does make a difference. Also with onboard memory to remember device settings on the go, and its sooooo smooth. You very well may need to get a solid or gaming designed mousepad for it though because it IS that senstive, I cannot use it on anything but solid surfaces and pads like that. 2 setting change top buttons, and 2 buttons on the right and left side. The buttons on the opposite side of your thumb depending on your orientation are kind of awkwardly placed though.
I highly recommend it if you dont mind the shape and all -
I just checked out the Razor, and I read that it has 9 programmable buttons, which sounds really nice, but the mouse itself looks uncomfortable as hell. Ive found the G5's shape to be very comfortable and my hand/wrist doesn't get sore no matter how long I'm on it at a time. Does the razor have the same comfort level after hours of playing, or is that something I'd have to sacrifice?

Razer mice are very comfortable in my experience, I have gone through several over the years; all of them I was able to use for 10+ hours. Going from something as generic as a G5, you'd be surprised at how much more 'focused' the Razer is. The Lachesis fits the hand better and gives great control; I would also suggest the Deathadder, which is slightly less money but equally as comfortable. Its DPI is not as high, however.
-
Money's not an issue at all, I'm just looking for quality. The Deathadder looks the same as the G5, only a different shape. If I'm going to upgrade I'd like to have more buttons than the G5 does. I went from 2 button (standard mouse) to 4 (G5) and it made things significantly easier and my in-game response time much faster. If I could get something with 5+ buttons It'll cut my keyboard bindings down a lot (which I find to be slow and clumsy)

From a quality standpoint I wouldn't look any further than Razer. They are a very specialized company and the quality I have witnessed in their products is hands-down superior to other mice manufacturers, especially Logitech (construction is more solid, the design is better-looking and much more natural in the hand, and it gives you more control). It may seem like I'm bashing Logitech unnecessarily, however it is my experience that almost all of their gaming gear carries inflated ratings.

No, unfortunately I've still got another...8 months left on this deployment, so I won't be able to run down to the nearest computer store and look at one before I buy.

The 9 buttons would be: Right click, left click, 2 left side buttons, 2 right side buttons, speed up button, speed down button, and the mouse wheel button. There is also a Profile Change button on the bottom of the mouse to use that instead of the other side buttons to do that. (up to 5 profiles)
At first, it was REALLY kind of odd to go from the shape of the G5 to the Lachesis because the G5 is so shaped for a palm of your hand design.
However, I got used to the Lachesis in a few days, and really started to feel it as completely normally within a week or two and it is so nice. I now actually am MORE comfortable for longer durations and feel better using it than the G5 now. Also I personally have the sensitivity on everything completely maxed out, but I have mouse acceleration all the way turned off.
The Deathadder, other than being a new mouse, is actually a downgrade from the G5 in terms of sensitivity. It does however have 5 buttons (mouse click, left/right click, and 2 left side buttons) and is a little more similar to the G5 in shape than the Lachesis which is still good, but the Deathadder has more of a palm shape.
The Lachesis is a lot closer to the surface of your pad than the G5 and I mean that in terms that the arch of your palm is a lot lower and flat on the mouse than the G5. I'd still reccomend the Lachesis though for the sake that it has a lot of improvements.
Also idk if its important BUT ive found that the Lachesis is INCREDIBLY, and I mean INCREDIBLY sensitive to the surface beneath it. When I say this I mean that if a hair or a little bit of dust gets onto the lens or in front of it, it will literally obstruct it from performing. All you have to do though is blow into it and itll be fine though, but I figured i'd mention that since you are in Iraq and may be in sandy conditions. Make sure you have a good surface for it too, and youre set. -
I recommend either the Logitech G9 or Microsoft Sidewinder. They each have plenty of buttons, high-precision lasers, and adjustable weights. The G9 also has different grips to choose from for different uses.

I've decided to go with the Razer Lachesis. Now do you have any suggestions for a good mouse pad? I haven't really looked into them too much, but do they make any that are stiff on the bottom, but still offer a smooth surface. Sometimes it's hard to find a flat hard surface around here and I have to play on my cot or bed or whatever's lying around.

A good mouse pad is a must. I suggest either one made by fUnc industries (I use this one), or one of Razer's mouse pads, which are excellent though quite large. I have used their ExactMat quite a bit and it is a phenomenal surface - basically one big piece of aluminum with textured and slick sides.
-
I got one of these Rocketfish brand new from my friend who got me a discount, it's a gaming mouse pad which is also a large piece of aluminum with smooth and textured sides to it and it has been wonderful for me, just careful with the feet but one came off just because my keyboard kept sliding into it.
I got it because it was great and cheap, its worked very well. Go for one Chaz reccomended though, especially one of those Razer ones for a razer mouse, it makes a nice set -
Just tried ordering the Razor mouse and mousepad off amazon, but they won't ship that product over seas, anyone know if I go directly through razor if they will ship over here, or another reseller that will?
-
Just ordered the Razer Lachesis and Exact mat from razor directly, hopefully they'll come in the same time as my comp.

Congrats! I think you will be very happy with that setup.

I find the deathadder's build quality and construction to be far inferior to the G5 or the G9 as I own one of each.
The feel of the G9 is quite different from the G5 and it may be difficult to adjust.
Regarding sensitivity, I think mice can be set to be way more sensitive than what I need so that wasn't a big concern to me. -
Once you completely get a feel for it, you're gonna love it -
I have the Razer Lachesis and it is a great mouse. I stepped it up from a G5.It is very comfortable too. 4000dpi. Its the nicest mouse I have ever used.
2 buttons on each side, 2 above the scroller, all programmable to your needs. -
..just curious ..where you deploy in .. I am in kuwait right now lol ... but as mouse pads ... I liked the ones that came with my dell , which is a steel(or some kind of metal) around the pad and underneath it which makes it solid .
