    Hi there,

So I have a set of logitech 5300 speakers that are 5.1. The Laptop has a single headphone jack, giving me only the 2.1 sound. What is the best way to achieve the the 5.1 sound? I'm assuming I'll need to buy some hardware, if so, any suggestions?

    Thanks!

You SPDIF digital optical output will contain your 5.1. But if you don't have that, it's also possible (and simpler) to use the HDMI port.

If you don't have that then you'll need a sound card capable of 5.1. Express card or USB which I can only assume it available. If you have that input on your Logitech, just plug and play.

the speakers I'm using having the standard 3 audio jacks (green, orange, black), so I'm thinking usb/ express card are my best options, hopefully someone has a product to suggest!

If it's a true 5.1 it has to have an equivalent port(s). If not HDMI then coax--or to a lesser likelihood--RCA?

You need some sort of receiver to take the 5.1 and decode it and then send it to a amplifier to the speakers.

With HDMI its almost always a home theater receiver or sometimes possibly a TV itself.

Those PC speakers with the 3 colored jacks are by no means ideal for this since they are self powered, you would be better off with a whole new setup rather than trying to make those work via HDMI.

Best thing for you is just a cheap usb sound card that has those jack ports.
