Do I need Noise Canceling Headphones if I am going to use them in a quiet room? Other than reducing ambient noise, does it improve sound quality in any other way?

I'm not sure how specific this guide gets, but perhaps it can help ya out just a tad bit....

No it will not improve the sound quality compared to using an open phone.

Personally I avoid noise canceling headphones, because theres always a noise in the back ground. If you want some noise isolation then just get some closed back headphones, I have the Ultrasone HFI-780's they're closed and they provide alot of isolation. You'll get a better sound stage and usually a more comfortable fit with open heaphones such as the Sennheiser HD595's.

^ what he said i have the razer ProTone m100 earphones and they cancel out a lot of sound but doesn't use artificial noise canceling.

Grado SR-80's are also a popular open model choice.

Noise canceling headphones only reduce certain sounds, usually below 1,000 herths and usually sound worse than open headphones. So no, you will not get a better sound with them.

They usually only cancel out noises that repeat them selfs in the same pattern, such as a motor. Any random or quick noises usually don't get stopped by noise canceling. So in alot of cases simple isolation phones are better.
