Has anyone used one of these: http://www.colordrives.com/2-monitors-to-1-pc-vga-hd15-y-splitter-cable-adapter.html

I know they allow you to hook up 2 monitors to 1 pc. But my question is can those monitors be extended desktops, or must they be cloned screens. I basically want to add 2 external monitors to my laptop...So 3 screens total -> laptop + 2 lcd's.

If this fails I'm going to have to hook up another computer to run the 2nd external over the network...which would be a second laptop so i could have 4 monitors technically...but id rather not go that route as my desk isn't that big.

Those are hit and miss. Sometimes they degrade the signal too much. I have also used a powered VGA splitter. That worked better, because it amplified the signal.

Does it allow you to extend the monitor or is it stuck at cloning the screen?

These will only clone a single screen. To have any sort of dual-view, it needs actual hardware support.

Thats what i thought. Thanks for the heads up.

Now, it seems my only option is software like maxivista http://www.maxivista.com/multi_monitor.htm
I have used their trial version before and it worked good...just not $40 good. Does anyone know of a free version of software like this?

Bill Gates uses a VGA splitter...it allows him to Drag a window from One monitor to Another... Read His Article Here

U can use CubeDesktop for Virtual Monitor if u dont have two physical monitors or a VGA splitter.

I was very intrigued by this cool idea so i did lot of research and found this Software...this is mainly for Laptop users.. as they can have 6 Monitors on-the-go

Virtual Desktop are a bit limited in terms of productivity. I believe most of us set up dual or even more screen so you can view all the information at once without having to press a key or shuffle around different windows. For example, when I am learn how to code program, I will have the editor on one screen and the example code/source on another screen that way I don't have to tab back and forth between two, but I would still have to tab back and forth if I used a virtual desktop.

Right, I do not want virtual desktops. I want a 3rd real monitor hooked up. I need to physically see 3 full screens worth of stuff at once.

i have a laptop only so Virtual Desktops the only solution on the go....i travel between countries so can't keep a Desktop...although i wanna build a Gaming Desktop soon..

To answer your question... There isnt any specific 3 to 1 Splitter... its Even no. .. 2,4, 8 ... You should Buy 4 to 1 VGA splitter..

    Check This

Checkout for Frequency.. Frequency is what matters.

Well i only want 2 external monitors + the laptops display. I really don't want to spend a lot of money. i think route i will go is actually install server 2003 on my desktop and set it up to mange all my pc's...something i have been meaning to do anyways. Then i will hook my 2nd lcd to that desktop and use maxivista to extend the desktop across it.
