are the quality of these devices even worth using, even if its a 'better' one? I dont even have a nice TV, but if I ever do get one, I will probably want to hook my laptop up to it. Incase it wouldnt have a VGA or DVI input, im wondering how good a VGA to HDMI converter would work, if anyone has one.

You can't technically send a analog signal and have it come out digital. You basically have a couple of options: get a VGA to Component Video or buy a TV/ Monitor that has VGA.

most TVs now should have HDMI, and usually VGA too

if you have a laptop with displayport or DVI, you can use the hdmi input on the tv

Your video quality, at absolute best, would be as good as VGA. You will not get close to the picture quality if you were to stick with pure DVI / HDMI.

These breakout boxes are really intended to allow you to connect to display devices that do not have VGA input capabilities, or to allow you to connect over long distances via digital connection without the signal loss you'd get from an analog connection like VGA. They are not intended for you to somehow magically get better image quality, because it doesn't work that way.

The only way to get better image quality than VGA out is to get your hands on a laptop, docking station, or external USB device that allows you to connect pure native DVI or HDMI.

I understand that as well, what I'm really asking I guess,is how good VGA looks on newer TVs, like can you still read text and whatnot,or is it too fuzzy?

I hate to give this answer, but it depends. It depends on the quality of the GPU you are using to drive the VGA signal, the quality of the VGA cable itself to shield itself from EMI, the quality of the TV you are using, and your own personal tolerance/perception of what is "good" or "bad" image quality.

Personally, I can tell you that connecting my laptop through VGA to a 1080p HDTV at 1920x1080 to read text would be a nightmare for my eyes. That is just a lot of bandwidth to carry over VGA, and even the smallest bit of EMI may cause problems with the signal. But for you, it may be perfectly fine.... so as much as I hate to say it, it depends.
