Very quick question: laptop sleeve size - buy the exact size of laptop or buy the next size up

Buy the one that fits your laptop. However like apparel, they are not all created equally: some run big. Some run small. Typically they're designed around Macs.

Same goes for laptops, not all are equal in size even when their display size is.

Usually igf you can, try and get a physical sample you can try and fit your laptop into. As others have said, it really depends. Screen size only refers to the actual screen (duh) but I've seen laptops with small bezels and others where it added almost an extra inch across so it's really better to check. Also, there's factors like the thickness of the laptop that'll affect how snug a sleeve will fit.

Good points. Unlike laptop coolers and other accessories, to my untrained eye the sleeves all seem the same. Is this true? Or are the more expensive ones better.

Brands I should get? Brands I should avoid? Or all good. Anything to watch out for other than size?

Using this with a laptop bag, hope that isn't weird getting double protection. But I think the laptop is getting some scratches in the laptop bag from other things.

To me they are generally all the same. Brand names may have fancier graphics printed on the sleeve and materials could be a little bit better. I'd say as long as the zipper works, cheap no name sleeve works just fine.

get the exact same size. i bought a 15" sleeve for my 13" asus, and now it just feels weird with about 2 inches of extra room.

As a matter of fact price and quality do not go hand in hand.

I've owned four since I got my laptop, and so far, the cheapest one I own appears to be the sturdiest of the group. Its lasted twice as long as the next one costing twice as much. The Precision's chassis chews right though neoprene. But the last one seems to be more resistant somehow.

Oh...it might help to mention my laptop. It's a 15.6'' ideapad.

Well obviously in this case the looser the fit, the less likely the sleeve is to be chewed by the notebook.

You could go custom if you felt the need, but if you change machines a lot then clearly not much point.

I would personally say get the next size up if it's going to be an in-bag-sleeve, which gives you flexibility. If you're going to carry it around by itself a lot then get one that fits properly.

I would buy the exact size. If you buy the next size up. The computer shifts around inside. it's pretty annoying sometimes when you're carrying it and the weight shifts

This thread is kind of strange. They say the sleeve fits 15.6 laptops because it does. You aren't buying a pair of jeans here.

Well not always per se. 15.6" is the size of the screen but I've seen laptops that have like huge bezels which adds a lot to the footprint dimensions. Examples would be like the MSI GS70 which IIRC is like 1" taller than a typical 17.3" laptop because of its thickness. So depending how snug a fit you want, best try it out first.

You know a sticky thread we should have? What sleeve fits what. Author posts fit details of their notebook & photo. I'm afraid The NBR Bag Lady can't help since I'm generally not a sleeve person (unless we're talking over the top, niche items or custom) but I'm sure it'd stop the asking of a lot of redundant questions...

Hey, just impulse bought a 15.6'' init laptp sleeve. It says its "polyethylene vinyl acetate", but everyone is recommending neoprene. Is there a big difference?

Good point. Those numbers measure the screen, not the chassis and/or its overhang.

Basically, the difference is that it's rubbery instead of stetchy. But then, you have it so presumably you should be able to tell the diff :p

Most sleeves tell you interior dimensions. And if your laptop and sleeve you're considering are fairly popular, just ask at Amazon or Newegg and usually you'll get a fairly quick response by someone that has the same setup.

One thing that I wish more sleeves would offer would be a pouch for a mouse.

Or own an MB. At least 90% of sleeves are patterned after them.

The manufacturers could offer this as well. I have to use a ziplock /baggie when transporting my mouse. Are you listening Logitech?

A thin/flat mouse would be great. But I don't see many options out there for that. One actually slides in your ExpressCard slot, if you have one, but there's no other way to charge it except that way.

I don't think that configuration would be something I'd consider as my main mouse, but it would be a better alternative than the mouse pad which I hate. Still, that streamline convenience is tempting if some manufacture could pull it off. You sound like you know of one?

I'm a fan of the Microsoft arc mouse - it comes with a fairly nice carrying bag, and folds in half to minimize size when not in use (this also shuts it off, preserving the battery, which is nice). The receiver is kind of large compared to a lot of the smaller ones, but it sticks magnetically under the mouse and is held securely when folded, so I don't mind the size.

There's also a newer version with a touch scroll strip, but I need the clickable wheel for cad, so I went with the non touch version. All in all, I think it's a great mouse for travel (and looks pretty professional, to boot), if a bit small for marathon usage and/or those with massive hands.
