    hi;

    I am looking to buy a external hard drive(1 TB).I never used an external HDD so I have many questions :))

    I want to know the difference between WD Elements and Passport Essential.Is it only about software? Is there any difference?

    and I heard that WD's are working so quiet. Is Samsung quite enough?
    Is there a overheating problem when I use it long times continiously?.

    The Samsung which I planned to buy is new released to market. but WD's are a bit older in the market.Is that important?

    and finally;
    The prices are WD passport Essential 179 USD , WD Elements 155 USD , Samsung 147 USD.(ALL of them are 1TB)

    IF you were me,what will you do?

    Thanks :)

    2,5" or 3,5"?

    For 2,5" I've seen so many bad reviews of the newer Passports with Micro USB ports that I went for a 1TB Seagate FreeAgent Go which performed nicely over summer - since then it's been in a drawer (no active need for it)

    I'm assuming were talking 2.5" drives here.

    WD external drives, ie not the hard drives contained inside don't have the best reputation.

    If the Samsung is a 1TB version of this: Amazon.com: Samsung S2 500 GB USB 2.0 Portable External Hard Drive HXMU050DA/G22 (Piano Black): Electronics then they are well thought of. There's a cool video of a couple of Koreans playing football with one and it still worked afterwards. I think they were just lucky though.

    I like portable drives that can take a bit of punishment like this: http://www.amazon.com/Transcend-Sto...6?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1287237736&sr=1-6. I don't think there's a 1TB version of this available yet.

    Fair point about cooling.

    I, too have that Transcend and also a Freecom 2.5" with an aluminium casing (and optional power supply). I've never had any problems with either. I'm careful when doing anything that puts a lot of heat into any 2.5" drive. I feel that I can control the load on a drive whereas an accidental drop isn't something I can control so that's why I favour shockproofing over cooling, but if your usage is different the reverse may be true.

    Fraid not - It was a long time ago, but it was something like this video of an S1. Suppose I could have got S1 and S2 muddled.

    I've always been a fan of hard drives with long warranties , the Seagate FreeAgent Go (5 year warranty) is top quality, small and works very well!

    I have three of these drives, and all perform exceptionally well.
