    Newegg rocks.

I ordered the Cavalry 1TB hard drive yesterday morning (10/28) for 149.99, and received it this afternoon.

    Amazing.

I am using this as a second external backup. Great deal.

Nice. How's it running (if you have it already)?

I've heard there's been performance issues with large capacity drives of late so I'm a bit hesitant in getting one.

Be sure to keep us posted on how well the drive works! I'm not sure why, but I keep seeing/hearing more about drive failures on larger-capacity HDDs, so I've been shying away from buying one for myself so far.

So far so good. It's quiet.

Synced right up with my computer. The one-touch backup software it came with is pretty darn good (though I usually avoid backup software).

It has a fan, which helped make my decision to buy it. I don't trust the passive cooling hard drives. The deal was so good I just couldnt pass it up.

I read a bunch of reviews on this one, and they were all good, even the ones from a few months ago. I, too, heard the concerns/complaints about large capacity drives so I will just keep my fingers crossed.

    This thing is amazingly small.

I just couldn't pass up the deal. I am using it as a second external backup. My primary is a 750gb HP Personal Media Drive which slips a slot on my desktop.

It's hard to believe my last desktop computer (a 2003 vintage Sony Vaio) only had an 80gb hard drive, and I thought that was huge when I got it!

My HP desktop has 750gb internally, plus a 750gb personal media drive, plus this 1TB external. :D

My current computer only has an 80GB HD. It's all I need. Vista takes up the most space of ANYTHING!

Actually, I do. Just not much that takes up space. I don't have a digital camera other than my webcam, I don't record a lot of videos (although I do have 733 MB downloaded FLVs from YouTube, etc.), I don't have a MASSIVE amount of music like some people (just 2.49GB), and only 203 MB of pictures. But that includes a good amount of wallpaper and random images, along with stock and GIMP projects. I have a WHOLE bunch of install files, zip files, and general computer info stored, a few books saved in HTML format, and some more text of my own quotes and poems and some other articles I've saved. Oh, and some web editing projects, and then just my games. Now, about my games, the largest game I have installed is probably DOOM 95, and then I have a bunch of DOS games, oh, and my MAME32 emulator games have a bunch of ROM files that undoubtedly take up some room. And a couple N64 emu games too. I tend not to leave programs installed if I don't use them a lot. And the ones I do have installed are generally free/open source, not taking up much room. So there you have it!

Vista takes up the most room. And then I have Ubuntu installed.

**** that's a sweet deal... When I got my laptop two months back, I figured I'd only need the 200GB internal...

Now between Oblivion, Fallout 3, NWN2, Dawn of War etc etc etc I've only got 80GB left... Shows how many high-end games my last (7yo) desktop could play, I'd only used 30GB on that ._.

Where did you find a 1TB for that price?

I'm going to upgrade my nas drive to 4tb. I currently have 99% of my 1.5tb filled up. And I have all my old 250(4 of them) full of stuff too..

Hi Syndrome ... why not get rid of your 250's!?!?

I got rid of all of my 250's and 320's ... made me sick to my Stomach ... I had paid like $140 each after Reabtes ... now I can get 1TB for $150 out of the door.

    G! :)

Rofl someone with "onizuka" as the name doesnt know how to fill 1.5TB? ^^

Anyway on topic: Id suggest people get the Antec MX-1 enclosure and buy a 1TB to go with it. 1TB drive by itself is like $99 pretty often. You get longer warranty on an internal drive anyway. The MX1 is actively cooled and has USB/eSATA.

Who said that all my eggs were in one basket? I also have a 750gb Personal Media Drive which I insert into the drive bay of my desktop, in addition to the internal 750gb AND this 1TB drive. I also just purchased a SECOND 1TB Cavalry Drive to use for media storage.

Of course, if you cannot afford several mega-drives, I suppose you would have to settle for two drives adding up to 1TB.

I use nas in a RAID0, so if one of my drives fail then I wont lose my data. Just as long as you replace it quickly, cause if two of them fail at the same time then you'll lose all your data. And trust me, that sucks(had it happen once).

That would definitely suck, Syndrome. I need to think about going to a massive RAID drive on my next upgrade in a couple of years.

My plan is to actually have two backup drives and alternate backups semi-weekly.

Great suggestion about the RAID, though! Thanks!

    I remember when a 40GB HD was 200$ and a 32MB stick of RAM was 100$.

Its nice that things have come down. :p

Yeah its really come down a ton. $99 for 1TB... I remember when 80GB was considered the "WOW" big hard drive.

I am a bit concerned with what seems like high failure rates in the 1TB drives. the 640GB WD Drives are still #1 on my list.

$75 really fast, cool, quiet. And very reliable.

Might as well get a 1.5TB drive from Tigerdirect for $150. But I second the WD SE2 640GB drive. I own one and it's a beast :)

I'm inclined to stick with 2 1TB drives, one for storage, and one for backup, supplemented by a new 500gb external, as well, and the 750gb personal media drive.

It seems to me that if the 1TB drives are bordering on the unreliable, a 1.5 drive would be even moreso. And TigerDirect...let's just say I have not had good luck with them.
