I want to buy a gaming mouse for my gx640 (which rocks btw, got it from RK with heatsink upgrade and I can oc it past 5870m easily). I have no budget and am leaning toward a wireless. However, I really don't want a big dock or receiver, so it seems an orochi or g700 are really my few wireless choices. I want the best, and I am right handed if that matters. Thanks in advance.

The Orochi is an awesome mouse, but you won't want to use the wireless mode for gaming; Bluetooth is inherently laggy and the mouse goes to sleep in that mode. It's great for normal office use, but you'll want to plug it in for wired mode.
If wireless isn't a necessity, the DeathAdder is worth looking at; it's relatively low-budget, wired, and right-hand oriented rather than ambidextrous like the Orochi. It's got a really smooth tracking 3,500 DPI optical sensor, and 5 buttons.
If it has to be wireless, then the G700 is a pretty solid choice, although on the pricey side.
What's your budget? -
No budget (aka I have enough for anything up to 150 or even higher if need be though I haven't seen any mouses higher than that). I did look at the deathadder, and am interested in it for a wired. But I like the g700 other than some of its flaws. Can anyone comment on the supposed tracking issues, battery life, and stiff cable? Also can it be used on glass/other random surfaces like a bed or couch? I will probably go for that barring another small/no receiver wireless.

I'm using the Logitech G700 now. Pretty satisfied

I am actually using a Logitech G700 right now. I don't have any problems about tracking issues. I do wish the battery would lsat a little longer - for me, I can use it about 1 week of general desktop use + gaming use at 500Hz USB polling rate. But the nice part about it is that you can charge it via USB cable, and still use the mouse while it is being charged. You cannot do that with the Razer Orochi (wired mode simply stops draining battery life, but does not recharge). And I do not have an issue with a stiff cable, but I could see how some very picky people could be affected by that. You could always use any microUSB cable to charge the Logitech G700, if you happen to prefer one microUSB cable over the one that is included in the package.
The Logitech G700 can be used on a variety of surfaces - desks w/o mouse pad, bedsheets, comforters, couch upholstery, leather couches, even your pants legs. It cannot be used on glass. The only two mice that I know of that can be used on glass are the Logitech Anywhere MX and the Logitech Performance MX, which use darkfield imaging technology to track.
I think you would be incredibly happy with the Logitech G700 like I am. There is currently a $20 rebate being offered through NewEgg for the mouse, which expires on 11/15/2010. So it's a perfect time to pull the trigger and buy. -
Thanks for your input. I will probably get it soon (from amazon as I have a gift certificate there). I do have an optical mouse that works on glass (logitech mx310 i think? its very old), but no glass is fine.
-
i have a local made mouse (cost around $2.5)... i got it for free by heavy bargain when i was purchasing for my laptop.. i am using this for more than a year. pretty much satisfied...
-
I'm using the Roccat Kone, it's an amazing mouse, I'm really happy with it.
You've got a huge amount of options to tinker with. The colours are cool but not the main thing. The most important feature I think is it's tcu (tracking control unit) it allows you to let the mouse read the ground it is upon (desk, glass, plastic,...) and it recalibrates itself then so you can use it on EVERY underground without the need of a mouse mat! -
If you are using a mouse for gaming then you should know that wireless is not the way. get a wired G7 trust me. I have the logitech G5 and i couldn't be anymore satisfied.
-
Roccat Kone [+] is quite decent as well. Check this out!

g700. I like. You like. game over.
-

The only issue is the battery life, although it should last for longer than you should be gaming in one sitting. You can always plug it in to charge, so the argument that you will be in the middle of a game and the battery will die on you is completely moot. The included cable is pretty stiff and I have trouble using the mouse with it, but I have other microusb cables that are more comfortable to use.
You could avoid the charging cable altogether by getting some AA eneloops and a charger, and always have a couple of freshly charged cells ready. That way, when the battery is depleted you can just switch it out for a fresh one and charge the depleted one with the wall charger. -

GtsXracer we have essentially the same setup! I am also using my G700 with an OCZ Behemoth pad, although my Lenovo is a Y460 not a Y560.
-
it's virtually the same
-
I just picked up a Deathadder 3.5G today and it's been a pleasure. I would rank the Deathadder (both the 3G and 3.5G) as one of the best wired gaming mouses out there.

Here I am still using my MX500! I plan on buying the G500 though. The MX500 sucks big time without Windows 7 support, forcing it to 400dpi...

I'll toss the SteelSeries Xai into the mix. It is a simple-looking but quite sophisticated gaming mouse. It has a symmetrical design and accommodates the various grip types well. It also has an excellent onboard profile switching/setting adjustment system.
It can be pricey ($90 MSRP), but worth it in my opinion. I have been using mine for several months with no issues. -
Hey Charles, what makes the Xai "special" from other gaming mouse in its price range? You seem to really like that mouse.

For starters, as I noted the grip accommodations are excellent. There are three different types of mouse grips; the Xai has been designed to accommodate all three. When I put my hand on this mouse it just feels right.
Something else I like about it is the consistent click feel. The mouse has been designed so that no matter where you press down on the left/right mouse buttons, the click feel is the exact same. I don't know how they managed that.
The scroll wheel is very precise; I can easily go 6 notches up without thinking too hard. One of the reasons I stopped using my Razer mouse was that its scroll wheel was imprecise -- I really had to concentrate to figure out how far I went.
These last two are small points, but important. SteelSeries uses a measurement called "CPI", or Counts Per Inch, instead of DPI. This, along with the polling rate, can be adjusted in increments of one (not like Razer/Logitech where you can only set the DPI/polling rate in certain increments).
I have my polling rate set at 960Hz -- my screen refresh rate is 60Hz, and 960 is evenly divisible by 60 so therefore the mouse position on the screen is 100% exact.
Lastly, the Xai has a small LCD on its bottom that makes profile switching extremely easy. You can store about a half-dozen profiles, each with two levels of sensitivity. You can also edit those profiles right on the mouse.
The Xai is basically a no nonsense mouse. The company worked with the top Counter Strike teams in the world to get it right . . . and I think they did.
If you want a detailed review of the mouse with pictures, send me a PM (it's on a site I am affiliated with, I can't link to it in the forums).

I haven't tried Logitech's latest gaming mouse but I am quite tempted. -
I found this review for the mouse: SteelSeries Xai Laser Gaming Mouse Review |

I found the xai to be on the small end, though it glides and moves very nice. i went with the Razer deathadder, i couldn't happier.

I ordered the g700 and a mobile edge sleeve for my laptop, and will get a targus xl later for college (unless theres a better backpack for that kinda stuff). Now the next thing is an audio upgrade. I will probably open a new thread for that later. Thanks for all of your help.
-
Last night I ordered a Logitech MX518 and a G500 before the deal ran out at Newegg. Whichever one I like least will go to my girlfriend.

If you are still looking for a great wireless mouse, I would go with the Razer Mamba, yes its a bit pricey, but it is such a good mouse, I picked one up the other week and I am absolutely loving it, no lag whats so ever (and I use it at a high sensitivity) it fits great in the hand and is extremely comfortable for extend periods of use. I am an animator and I used to get hand cramps after using a mouse for 5 hours + but not anymore haha, it flies along my Razer Destructor, the battery life has been great with it (but I just throw it on the dock when I'm not using it) over all, great mouse, and I am glad I upped my budget a bit and picked it up.
Happy findings. -
The mouse and case are coming today, so I will try to get some impressions up as soon as possible. Thanks for everyone's help, now I need help with my ipod setup and will probably open a new thread for that. I have a 2g Ipod Touch and se420 and want to see if there are any upgrades that are worthwhile and not over like 200 dollars. I just really want some new cool gadgets as I never had a top of the line gaming computer until now. Now there is very little to buy. QQ

I got the mouse, it is perfect. It fits my hand perfectly which are not that big, it has a great finish on the mouse, buttons are right where I want them, not too heavy. Also cable is not stiff at all (maybe its just me, I was using an old logitech with a similar cable for a while). Thanks for all the help, if anyone has any questions, ask away.
Also the mobile edge case is perfect sized for my gx640 with extended battery (it is the 16 inch variety). -
Got both the G500 and MX518 mice this afternoon. These were really my only two options when it came to getting a new mouse. It had to be a Logitech and it had to be a derivative of the MX500, because that is what I've been using since 2002 when it came out and my dad replaced our Microsoft optical gaming mice. I bought my personal MX500 in 2005 bnib on Ebay long after they had been replaced by the MX510 and 1st generation MX518.
I like the G500 dual-action scroll wheel, but it isn't a must-have and I can feel it shake when I move the mouse around quickly. The buttons to change between the DPI presets are more intuitive, faster to hit, and feel better on the G500. I like the paint scheme of the MX518 better, though I am not a real big fan of it anyway. I prefer the textured G500 over the smooth MX518. With both mice set exactly the same way, I can't tell any difference with the pointer or precision or anything like that on the desktop. As far as weight, I can barely tell the MX518 is lighter than the G500 by picking it up. One thing I changed that might affect the conclusion is that I swapped the cases of the MX500 and MX518. The cases of both mice are completely compatible even though logitech retooled the bottom part of the MX518's case in 2006-7 I think. What is interesting is that the circuit board of the MX518 is much more basic than that of the MX500. Anyway, at least after swapping cases, the MX518 simply glides much better than the G500. It feels far lighter on the mouse pad. I prefer my mice light. If I had to choose right now, I would pick the MX518. Still, I'm going to give the G500 a chance to see if I can get used to it and if I will like it more. -
Little Dissapointed you didn't even consider the Razer Mamba. I was choosing between the both but the polling rate is double on the Mamba. G700 is a sweet mouse but when I read the comparisons it was hands down. For the other guy talking about a wired g7 LOL never existed, I had a G7 wireless for 2 years and loved it to death, the next logical step was the mamba, pretty much a g7 with higher dpi.
-
G700 and Razer Mamba are both rated at 1ms Responce Time.
-
"When I read the comparisons it was hands down"
Did the comparisons you read happen to come from Razer's website?
Q: How does the latency of the Razer Mamba compare to other wireless mouse technologies?
A: o Bluetooth – 14ms
o Generic 2.4Ghz – 8ms
o Gaming Grade 2.4Ghz – 2ms
o Razer Mamba – 1ms
Both the Razer Mamba and the Logitech G700 are capable of 1ms latency (1000Hz USB polling). Both the Razer Mamba and the Logitech G700 use 2.4Ghz wireless technology. You're also selectively ignoring how the Razer Mamba costs +50% more than the Logitech G700 ($130 vs. $87 on NewEgg), and how the Razer Mamba has a wireless docking / recharging station that is a rather inconvenient size and shape to carry around.
Don't believe everything that's marketed towards you. Otherwise, you might start buying Bose and Monster Cable products too. -
It was really the dock that made me not want a mamba. Otherwise I might have sprung for it, but the cost was a good bit higher as well. I really like the g700 as it fits my hand perfectly and the cable isn't stiff to me.
-
For me, the docking station is kinda chunky too. That was one of the reason I didn't choose Mamba.
-
Nobody seems to know the Cooler Master Sentinel Advance. It's easily one of the best mice out there in terms of laser sensor and tracking precision. It's on par with the G700's sensor or even better. Google it for some review.
-
The G9X and the Deathadder are by far the two most popular reasonably priced gaming mice.
-
Im hooked by Razor, always used Logitech before. But since Copperhead I use only Razor's mice. At the moment I have Lachesis, but my friend recently bought Imperator... now I know, that mouse is going on my table next. Great mouse, really really like it.
-
-
I just turn down the sensitivity to compensate...and you can always adjust the DPI down. -
yea i no that but, when are you ever going to use 5600 DPI ??
Neva !
Then when you use your touch pad it going to be like a snail. -
-
Exactly...the Mamba would definitely be overkill for my 12" netbook.
But it's perfect for my desktop gaming PC with three monitors.
-
haha then in that guess then yes.
