water resistant is somewhere in between nothing and waterproof. it most likely means that they have sprayed some sort of dupont or 3M chemical that helps with water repellance

as to fully waterproof, i personally go for something with a rubberized interior lining for full protection such as the timbuk2 bags. There's a smaller company in the US that i'm a huge fan of www.tombihn.com and i believe that they have waterproof bags although design wise it's a matter of taste.

Here's a post that has a bunch of bag manufacturers on it

If your concern is rain and not keeping your laptop dry while white water kayaking, get a backpack (nylon or leather) that is water resistant and then find a good water repellent spray and seam sealer.

You may need to reapply the water repellent spray once a year or so as it does wear off over time. Seam sealer is likely overkill if the bag is already water resistant and then treated with a waterproofer.

You can find the spray at a sporting goods shop for around $10-$15.

Granger and Nikwax are both great brands but ask the experts at your friendly local sporting goods shop for more info. ;)

I just posted this in another thread but i think you might find it useful, it was aimed at somebody else, but you get this picture from it.

I got mine off Amazon.co.uk i think but the bag is about £30-35
