So I'd like to tidy up my desktop from sprawling card readers, etc and I'm looking for two possible solutions.

    a) Attach cameras / phones directly to PC
So some kind of weighted base with a couple of different USB cables wound on to it - microUSB and miniUSB. So I just yank out the cable to the length I need and it locks, like a vacuum cleaner. Winds back in also in the same way. In fact, it would be great if there were provision for 3 or 4 different types of cables so that I could also attach my PMP's / phones in the same manner.

    or
    b) continue to use cards, but have a neater thing to plug them into.
So a desktop, standalone multi card reader with some form of weighted base so that I can pop cards into them one-handed

    Suggestions?

I just blutack my card reader to the desk, it holds firmly. Make sure you get a reader that doesnt have a spring loaded mechanism. Those require a lot more force to pop cards in.

What about a 3-port USB hub, a multicard reader and audio jacks in your desk?:

I guess fixed to your desk is as "weighted" as you can get. ;)

There's also a version with a smaller radius but the same ports:

If you prefer something that has a top cover when not in use this 3rd version might be for you, but you'd have to live without the card reader and the audio jacks:

(Sorry for the German links but I found no equivalents in English.)

Those are really good ideas actually - but unfortunately a) my setup changes often - or at least has changed often, maybe less now b) my desk at home doesn't have cable management holes.
