    Hey guys,

Sorry if this is the wrong forum to post in. I bought an envy 1040ca laptop about two months back and I accidentally chipped a small piece of the paint on the laptop (not sure how it chipped). I didn't think it would chip off so easily because I take extreme precautions when dealing with my laptop (I'm a neat freak) so if I were to hit it hard to chip paint, I would of noticed.

I'm pretty pissed about this spot and has been bothering me. Would anyone know a safe way to get the chipped area black again? Here's a picture of the computer from the HP website. The chip on my computer is right beside the touchpad on the right side:

This computer is also very vulnerable to finger prints. A few more questions I have:

    - Does anyone know methods of protecting against finger prints?

    - Does anyone know where I can get a keyboard plastic cover for a multilingual keyboard layout?

    - If there are no methods of protecting against finger prints, can someone suggest me a safe way to clean the fingerprints off? Is there some sort of spray I can use or will water and a eye lens cloth suffice?

    - I took the laptop to school one day and when I brought it home I noticed there were scratches on both sides of where the webcam sits. The scratches are from the touchpad and its design. Is there any way I can get these scratches removed? Does HP take care of scratches?

I know I'm being a big baby but I have a hard time spending large amounts of money on things and they turn up with these conditions.

Thanks so much for the answers

I believe zagg invisible shield does custom cuts on their kiosks, it will definitely protect from scratches and fingerprints.

Also one of those laptop sleeves should be able to help out with scratches as well.

You can use a micro fibre cloth to clean the screen and fingerprints

You are not alone my friend. If I knew that my ge60s fingerprint magnetness would be causing me this much headache, I would have saved another 2 months for the additional 200$ and gotten myself a gt60.

Great information, I really appreciate it, thanks! I'll be taking a look at Zaggs (I'm assuming they're a bit expensive though), would anyone have a cheaper alternative? I already have a sleeve. Unfortunately, the scratches on the sides of the camera are from the laptop design itself. I'm thinking about contacting HP about it but I doubt they'll do anything.

Phew, good thing I'm not alone. Scratches and fingerprints are the worst!

Yeah, scratched and fingerprints are the worse, but they are unavoidable.

@OP, unless the plastic itself is chipped, HP will likely pass it off as wear and tear. You may be able to get the chipped paint repaired under warranty, but forget about the scratches.

As they say, there is no harm in trying, but don't get your hopes up.

They sell protective cloths that rest between keyboard/touchpad/palm rest and the monitor. Alternatively, you could just cut a piece of thin fabric to protect your screen and bezel agains those things. My Envy 14 came with a very basic one and I regret throwing it out, as there are irreparable keyboard and palmrest impressions on my screen now. For the exterior, as others said, a protective film should prevent most scrapes and chips, but it's not failproof. You also have to ask yourself if cosmetic protection is worth that kind of price tag. Scratches on the screen affect usability, but scratches on the exterior are almost always purely cosmetic, and those that are more serious than simple cosmetic blemishes won't be significantly protected against by a protective film.
