I have a DV5 on the way and I have a 10 year old Targus carry case (with the shoulder strap) from my old laptop. I was wondering if I should use it or buy a sleeve and stick it in my bookbag. This will be brought to school with me.

You need to make the poll a multiple choice one.
Sometimes I use a laptop messenger bag, other times I use a sleeve in a backpack. -
Commander Wolf can i haz broadwell?
I use a backpack with a laptop pocket. No sleeve. In general I find that backpacks are more ergonomic and have more capacity than shoulder-strap bags both of which are important to me.

I have a Targus backpack which has a section for a notebook. I also have my notebook in a sleeve while in the backpack. I suppose, however, that if you have no problem carrying your notebook in a regular backpack, then just get a sleeve for the computer. Since it's a dv5 that you have coming, you definately want to keep it scratch free, as it has more gloss on it than a car.

I use this sleeve in black:
And a regular backpack.
I am thinking of upgrading my backpack but I really don't need to, so I'll probably keep mine until it wears out some more. -
I am using a Zeroshock III sleeve and a Knomo Vichy Leather ladies bag for Uni and work trips with my TT.
The Vostro sits on a desk all the time.
My HP 15.4" for work travels in an Oxio Style Freedomer Messenger or depending on location a black Pelican hardcase or a sleeve inside a Maxpedition Pygmy Falcon backpack -
This is what I have now. It is 10 years old and I have no idea if it looks "old fashioned" or not. Is this too geeky to walk around a college campus with?

I don't think it looks excessively geeky, but wear and tear may be a factor in it's replacement. And there are definitely nicer looking bags available.
I've recently updated my sig to include all the bags I use.
I usually walk around with either a Sony TT, Z or UX - and if I absolutely have to, the Air.
And for that, my main bags at the moment are the 15"-accomodating Knomo Bungo / Finne (predecessor to the Bungo) shoulder bags and the Dunhill Ensign document bag (the Ensign is not a laptop bag but usually it's only the TT or UX which goes in there - so I use the Sony sleeves/pouches). The Swaine Adeney Paternoster will probably take over from the Knomos, but it's currently having some minor work done to it before I use it.
For the 17" Macbook Pro's, I use the 17" version of the Bungo and the Hayden (once again, the predecessor).
Backpack wise I use the Axio Urban and the Swift when I need my hands free, when I know I'm going to be walking around more, and also for light cycle commutes. The problem with the Axios as backpacks is that although they look different to most packs (and that's the reason I bought them) there's not actually a huge amount of room in them once you stick a laptop in. Recently I needed to carry more on the bicycle commute so that role was taken over by the Targus XL, of which I'm very happy with the design and build for the very low price.
If the Dell Covets need to be carted around, I usually stagger around with one in the stm Convertible, as it won't fit properly in the Axio's. It's quite a versatile bag, although it doesn't really have much more space than a fat 17-incher + power accessories. There are a few quibbles such as the velcro fastening and the integrity of the inside pockets - but I suppose it's fairly typical of a very cheap bag.
On rarer occasions when venturing out to places where laptops need further protection, I tend to use the Hardigg IM2370 if carrying one or a small number of laptops. For larger numbers, we have other boxes. -
I use this for my SZ and TX. I use the front pouch of the sleeve for the TX.
Btw, i did not pay the price listed for it.

I also have a Timbuk2 electric green grip sleeve bag which i used with my MBP. It fits a 13 inch in a sleeve i don't use it that much anymore.

No on second thoughts I like my Vichy for my TT too much right now
There are just way too many nice bags out there for notebooks and in general for my liking....just keeps giving me an excuse to go shopping all the time hehe -
I just toss it in my backpack (third option of the poll, but without the part about the sleeve).

Case Logic sleeve for my 12" HP tx2500, put in my small Timbuk2 messenger.

I use a Targus backpack that doubles as my "everything bag". It's roomy enough that I just throw whatever I will need for that day in it, and I'm off.

I use a combination of

I have used the backpack for the last 5 years and it is unbelievably built. I switched to the laptop bag and switched back after a few months. The backpack is much more comfortable. -

Hard shell + carrying case + laptop backpack. The carrying case is mostly to keep dirt out. Haven't washed my backpack in awhile lol.

It would be nice if someday, you can get it, but not at what would be a higher cost...

Pelican 1495 case for my 9262. Watertight, crushproof, dustproof... weighs a ton. Well my sager isn't really that portable, so why should the case be? Good thing there's a shoulder strap!
-
I was using the backpack that came with my G1. It was damaged, so I think I'm going to get a motorcycling specific bag and use my Case Logic neoprene sleeve with it.
-
I'll be using this 5 yr old Targus backpack I used with my old ze4230 (a 15-incher if I remember right). Sturdy, spacious and well padded.....served me well for 2 1/2-3yrs in college (with my old lappy) and since I'm about 4 months from graduating, wouldn't make sense to buy something brand new.
-
once i get my sleeve (zeroshock III), i'm going to put my laptop in the sleeve and carry it with a backpack
-
I use the Targus TCG216US. It's very comfortable to carry around a college campus and holds my large 17" Sager, as well as all my books with room to spare.
-
I use a Belkin Neoprene sleeve to cover my notebook and use just a regular backpack to carry it in.
-
A Case Logic backpack for laptops. So I guess it's choice 2 then?
-
I use just a regular Targus laptop case.
