Not sure If I'm supposed to post this here, but I'm going to.

I want a monitor for my desk, and a CRT just won't fit. So I want a flat panel LCD.
    My qualifications are simple:

17" (wide would be nice, but can't find any)
    minimum 600:1 contrast ratio
    minimum of 300 cd/m2
    good viewing angles, like 160/160
    minimum resolution of sxga (1280x1024)

I would love to find a widescreen, or a higher resolution. I would go for a 15.4" widescreen, a 17" widescreen, or a 17" standard, nothing else.

    Any suggestions are appreciated! :D

Samsung and NEC have always been the premium brand of LCDs, it depends how much you are willing to spend.

Dell rebranded LCDs are also pretty amazing for what you pay for.

I've always gotten Dell monitors, and they seem to hold up well. I'm pretty picky about how things look and they even look nice. At times you can get 20" wide for fairly cheap too..

The 2007wfp is a pretty good 20" LCD, I got mines for $299 Canadian, and it's been awesome. The viewing angles and brightness are pretty good for something this inexpensive, probably one of my best purchases so far :)

Thanks for your thoughtful input. I'm DEFINITELY giving you a good post feedback for that one!

Thanks to the rest of you who actually helped. NEC seems to be a bit pricey for what you get, so Samsung it is. I have a Samsung phone and I like it, I guess I'll keep the trend going.

I have a general question: Are all LCD monitors compatible with laptops? If so, what connections do you have to buy? Thanks, Nick

Exactly how limited is your desktop, Steve? The closest widescreen match for the 17" standard monitor you've suggested would be a 20.1" widescreen, most of which run WSXGA+ (1680x1050) resolution. For widescreen, I wouldn't go any smaller... below 20.1" your max resolution will be WXGA+ (1440x900), which is shorter than the SXGA (1280x1024) you've specified as your minimum resolution.

That aside, I'll second Cori's advice and recommend a Samsung... they make some very nice panels, although the Viewsonic VX2025WM (a 20.1" widescreen) is an excellent all rounder.

<OT> Like the new avatar, Cori... Excel Saga I presume? </OT>

Why are high resolutions so easy to find on laptops, and not regular LCD monitors? You can get 1920x1200 on a 15.4" laptop, but can't get above 1280x1024 on a 17"? That's pretty annoying.

Yea, its really hard, thats why I abandoned anything under 20" and got a 20".

I can't stand anything under WSXGA+/SXGA+ which is what I have on my notebook.

Not sure what my avvy is, It's familiar but never put my finger on it.
