    i usually try different solutions in order of how quickly they can solve the problem:

    different usb port
    change battery
    clean install of drivers
    consider interference of signal by other devices
    assume the device is faulty and seek replacement

    i'm assuming the surface the mouse is on is the same 'a few inches away' and 'more than a foot away'?
