I don't know much about external hard drives but a friend has told me I should purchase one to put my data on just in case the hard drive in my laptop fails. I have an Inspiron 6000. Any suggestions welcome.

    Thank you

Chere, from here Dell Inspiron 6000 Specs - Laptops - CNET Reviews
it appears that you have 1 firewire and 1 USB connection. Either way do not expect fast transfer speeds. I have asked a moderator to move this thread, so if you see this later it may be linked to another sub forum where you will get a quicker response.

Seagate GoFlex. Compatible with almost anything. And the ports can be "upgraded" via extensions if you need to in the future.

Western Digital's are just as good.

Seagate go flex Pro is my choice, the 7200rpm and two year warranty is a plus.

I have Western Digital My Passport and Lacie Rugged. Both are great external hard drives. I would personally take the Lacie Rugged (although it cost much more than WD) because it is very durable.

Western Digital Passport or Seagate Goflex.

Find a good deal, they are really cheap these days. I noticed they are trying to clear out the USB2.0 models everywhere

Instead of looking for a pre-built solution, you might want to look at purchasing an external enclosure and a storage drive separately. This allows you greater flexibility and has the potential to save you money.

    However, a few questions remain:

    1) Do you want this external storage device to be a mobile or stationary solution?
    2) What is your budget for this purchase?
    3) What type of data connectivity will you be using/does your laptop support?
