I've found that something like this works best... You can find them at a Target or the like?

    http://www.levenger.com/PAGETEMPLATES/PRODUCT/Product.asp?Params=Category=5-24|PageID=614|Level=2-3|Link=PI|special=search|ID=SearchClicked|i=3

EDIT- it should be noted that keeping a laptop on your lap is dangerous, the bottom of a laptop can burn your skin easily... not to mention it can permanently damage some other important things down there ;)

Alright gaylord, you wonder why ANY computer company won't call it a 'laptop' internally? Its because when the company is contacted for service and they refer to it as a laptop that opens them up for a lawsuit from anyone that gets burned... They call it a portable or a notebook. I wonder why the companies that make these things are so concerned about it? Maybe because they know its a possibility... I'm not pulling this out of my ass, I've worked as a Dell tech

Oh and the burn thing set aside, you obviously don't have any aspirations of raising a family when you're older? Its well known that sperm whose temperature has been raised by only a few degrees can become inactive permanently... Good luck expaining to your wife that the reason why you can't get her pregnant is because you played too much WoW when you were younger ;)

I have an HP DV6000t, and frankly, it hardly gets warm in my lap. Get a good laptop, and don't worry about it!

My little IBM X21 is small enough that it'll fit on one of my thighs, lol... I've used my bigger Averatec 6110 on my lap before and had no issue with it getting too hot, long as I kept the fan intake open.

aw, come on laxman. That study used Pentium 4s.

Companies are paranoid, and rightly so. It is the case that some laptops can get hot, but others aren't so bad. I'd be comfortable with mine in my lap, provided I didn't block the vent. It doesn't get that hot, unlike my old thinkpad...

What I've done in the past is had the laptop off my lap, and an external keyboard on my lap... that's just because I like big old keyboards though... (that's nearly on topic, right?)

wait, I said decent laptop and someone gave experience with Dell?

seriously though, a friend has a E1505 and doesn't like using it on his lap. I handed him my T43, whose processor was at around 70*C at the time according to NHC, and he was fine with it. The laptop does not get hot on the bottom. And the only vent is an intake in the center, where it won't be blocked by a leg if used on a lap.

Another friend has a Toshiba that has permenantly discolored his desk from the heat it goves off.

And my favorite drink is Mountain Dew, if you are worried about my sperm count.

My XPS M140 I can use in my lap fine... my M90 gets way to freaking hot. Very uncomfortable to use w/o somethng between you and the computer.
