The title says it all... I am looking to purchase an external monitor 23 in or maybe 24 in for my M17X and was wondering what is the best RGB LED screen to date available?

The only one which I found great reviews for is this one: Samsung PX2370

If you're looking for the best monitor for photography and accurate color reproduction, hands down it's the 24" HP LP2480zx - 10-bit (30-bit) H-IPS panel w/ A-TW and RGBLED backlight at WUXGA (16:10) resolution, though you're gonna have to dish out $1500. It might help if we knew what is your budget, your usages and any other pertinent information.

You might want to consider the Eizo Color Graphic CG245W over the HP, but it'll cost you more. But when spending that much money I would recommend getting a larger monitor while you are looting your bank account.

What panel does the Eizo use?

I second that. The Hp panel is about as good as it gets for flat panel display. But it's a professional grade device with a cost to match.

    Incidentally, that's an excellent price

According to THIS website, the Eizo uses a LM240WU4-SLA1 panel.

That's what I find odd since on Eizo's website, it states that the monitor uses 12 bit per color, giving it a little over a billion colors via the DisplayPort. There's also the brightness descrepencies of 270 nits vs 400 nits.

Dell U2311H is quite good, one of the cheapest monitor with IPS panel. PX2370 is TN panel though.

A 10-bit panel like in the HP would already give you 1.07 billion colors, and I have yet to see a 12-bit panel...

Both the HP LP2480zx and Eizo CG245W use a 12 bit LUT table, but Eizo has a more accurate 3D table. The internal computations are done in 12 and 16 bit, respectively. The Eizo is self-calibrating. Eizo uses a CCFL backlight that is monitored by a sensor to keep brightness and colors stable over time. And unlike the HP, Eizo lets you adjust brightness and color uniformity across the screen.

I want to thank you guys for all the information provided. I should have clarified that I am not looking for a professional grade screen since it will be mainly for gaming. I would like something with similar quality than the RGBLED screen from the M17X R2 which is quite amazing to me.

In which case, most budget TN glossies should get close. And I'm not being sarcastic.

As Vogelbung stated, almost all laptops use 6-bit TN panels, which can easily be matched by pretty much every desktop LCD out there. What is your budget? Do you have any requirements for a monitor such as height adjustable, rotatable, etc.?

My budget is in the $500.00 range but the M17X R2 screen is nothing compared to any of my other recent laptops. It's really special. It's quite amazing...

I've compared it to recent external monitors and they don't even come close. Only and RGB LED would come close.

Are you mixing up the two different components? There is the panel and the backlight. The Alienware uses a 6-bit TN panel and RGBLED backlight. What exactly do you find great with your screen?

Well, the colors for one thing. The contrast which is amazing. I've never seen a laptop screen before able to have pitch black with the next pixel being bright red.

I am only able to compared to external monitors which are use CCFL as backlight and there is no comparison. The laptop screen is a million times better than my Dell 24 in screen: Dell UltraSharp U2410.

That screen used to be amazing compared to what I had but when I got the R2 with the RGB LED LCD, it was just good for the trash. I just want something as good as that AW screen that's all.

I think the red, green and blue backlight makes the screen amazing because even my WLED screen from my work Dell does not even compare to the AW M17X R2 screen.

    The Alienware's glossy, right?

It's the 'lipstick on a pig' glossy layer which makes blacks darker and colours pop more. Fools consumers who don't know what to look for. As I said, any number of low-end glossy panel'ed displays will give you the same effect, albeit without the RGBLED backlight.

I know glossy screens impact the colors but remember my PC is for gaming not for extensive photoshop use. I hate mate screens, that is what I have on my work PC and it's just bad. The colors are not reproduced accurately and the text is more difficult for reading.

Again this is according to me and what works for me.

But every one that has seen the M17X R2 RGB LED screen is completely amazed. It is the best laptop screen ever produced by far.

Maybe you have never seen that screen but compared to my Dell external monitor it is night and day. There are actual details on the same pic that cannot be seen on the Dell monitor or on my work PC that are clearly detailed on the AW screen all this due to more correct color reproduction.

So yes I am sure it's not good compared to a professional screen made for photoshop but you cannot spit on it and all I want is the same on an external monitor. I even went to Fry's with my PC to compare it to all the monitors on display. Not one and I am not kidding not even one came close and all the reps there were amazed by my screen. It's just light years ahead of anything I've ever seen.

    Yes. As I said, you're a consumer.

Go look at cheap, glossy 22-24" monitors like the Dell SP2309W. It's high-res, glossy, well specced and physically looks great. The higher pixel density will increase the impact of the lipstick-on-a-pig layer, like your laptop. You will find it impressive.

My brother recently bought the Dell SP2309W and yes it looks nice but no matter what you say it's nothing compared to my laptop screen. I guess I will just have to wait until technology moves forward.

The AW screen is still years ahead of the Dell SP2309W. I wish I could explain it better with words but I can't. He was so pissed off that my laptop screen looked better that he returned it. :)

I will try the RGB LED Samsung screen that just came out and see if it compares and let you guys know.

Got any side by side pics? But yes, the RGB LED gives a much strong color gamut than regular CCFL and is generally brighter with more contrast. The panel itself also contributes to color gamut and contrast, and most significantly to viewing angles.
