I recently bought a Latitude E6400 with a 9-cell battery (haven't received it yet though). I plan to take it with me a lot, and on a bike fairly often, so I was planning on getting a backpack. But I also have a couple 1-2 inch textbooks to carry every day with me, too, and I don't think they'll fit in most backpacks advertised as "laptop backpacks," will they? I've already got a nice backpack that fits all those, so should I just get a sleeve or something for my laptop? What kind of a sleeve would fit a 14.1" notebook with an awkward battery sticking out the back? I just want some kind of protection for it. Thanks.

Well a 15.4'' sleeve would always work, but you should be able to stuff the notebook+9 cell into a neoprene sleeve anyway, I don't think a memory foam sleeve will give you much space for stretching.
