I mean like do the majority of them use backpacks or messenger/briefcase
style? By the way, I'm goin into business school.
-
Being it that you're a business student, i would say messenger/briefcase because it looks more professional. I personally wear a backpack that weighs about 35lbs ( literally )
-
Backpack will let you carry more than a Messenger bag. But yeah messenger bags give more class.
For college though, if you got a 17" screen (or any thick laptop) and hope to carry more than one hard-cover book and notebooks, than even a full-sized messenger bag isn't for you. (to carry more stuff). -
well im gonna get a lenovo x200 -- a 12incher and i wish to carry one or
two hardcovies.. -
hmm...now that I think about it, your hardcover books are maybe thinner than the ones in my mind.
-
in college people use whatever they want. i personally see more backpacks then messenger bags, and briefcases get you hung from a flag pole at my school. (ok jk but really no one uses them)
just pick whatever you like. -
I use a backpack because I have too much stuff to carry around. Really though you should use whatever you like the most. Don't let your choices be influenced by those around you. Those days ended during highschool.

I think that backpacks are better, especially if you use a bike on campus.
-
agreed with ^, don't use a messenger bag for biking. espicially around umass, it sucks biking around there.
-
yay, Umass buddy! though biking around campus would mean you're not in the Boston campus like me. xD
-
i use backpacks since i think they look better than messenger bags.
-
Most guys wear backpacks and women wear the messenger bags/totes. But personally my shoulder can't handle the weight of my laptop (R61) so I'm opting for a backpack (function > style).
-
I have both, messenger for when I only need my M1330 which is usually for only 1 class but for when I am going to be out for awhile or multiple classes I use my backpack.
-
I'm going to be using a backpack. I just grabbed a neoprene sleeve and i can use w/e backpack i want. Difference is, i'll have my car on campus, so if i want to i can leave books in there and grab them if i have a nice 1-2 hour break between classes.
-
Backpacks are more comfortable if you are walking around campus a lot (and most campuses are large). If you're walking very short distances, then messenger bags are fine.
-
I would agree backpacks would seem more easy to carry. I believe it also depends on the person, and what they can handle weight & design wise!
Messenger bags, are great though...and if you can find a nice one that has the ease-of-use in the shoulder strap, design.....You just may want to look at some Messenger bags

i'd agree with cin, but my recommendation is a messenger bag. there is very little need to carry books around in college, just a notebook or your laptop, whichever you take notes on. and messenger bags are fine for that.
but to each his own. -
I was quite undecided with regards to which backpack to purchase. I ended up purchasing 2 and will alternate between them (ePac 17" roller + Targus Voyager). I found the backpacks to be much more spacious and accommodating on my back rather than a messenger which sort of strained my shoulder a bit.
Anyhow, during my many visits to my university to visit my cousin/friends as well as checking out my future university, I found that most people had backpacks. A guesstimation would be 7 backpacks to 3 messenger bags or 8 backpacks to 2 messenger bags. -
it's all about comfort, in highschool i was the ONLY person using a messenger bag. (no fooling) just pick whatever is comfortable.
-
^I'm going to UMass Amherst this fall too. How often do you bring textbooks to class, and what are you majoring in? I'm almost considering just getting a laptop sleeve and leaving it at that.
What kind of bag to people carry around in college?
