I have a gateway 6860fx laptop and would like to buy a better sound card. I think my laptop has a mini pci-e slot, and of course it has one of the express slots on the side.

What's a good sound card to buy?

A DIY ViDock - gives HDMI sound via the video card's soundcard. Though not useful for portability.

    it depends on your needs
    2.1, 5.1, 6.1, 7.1? headphones,speakers? your media (mp3, wave, radio/tv etc)?
external sound card are way better than internal sound card mainly due to interference inside the laptop
there are very good but expensive devices

I bought a small inexpensive usb 3d audio devices from ebay and the sound quality is really better. I wasn't convinced first but for casual use it's just perfect. (I bought mine 3$ shipping included)
this device allow you to add bass boost, virtual surround, room correction and loudness equalization

ill tell you this from experience that lots of the "expresscard" sound cards are usually just usb devices in a different plastic casing. unless you go for the diy vidock method you wont get anything a usb device cant do. (or at least this is how the cards ive use now and in the past were)

i can vouch that the diy vidock method works because i have used it with my xfi titanium card on my laptop just fine with all features working. in fact i think i posted a few pictures of it in the thread mentioned above.

if you want something to listen to music or movies on the go then i suggest a closed ear headset like the logitech g35 that i have (spectacular for movies :D)

if you want something to connect your lappy to a surround sound. i have an xfi 5.1 surround external that i use to connect the laptop to my home theater. (i use optical toslink for pass through audio)

i also have the xfi notebook which is an "expresscard" that has absolutely no hardware acceleration so its basically a usb card in an expresscard case. the only thing this does that a usb device cant is transmit the audio wirelessly to a dock that is of course sold separately for a ridiculous price.

ive used a few others but this is what ive stuck with for the most convenience.

    Echo Indigo.

I've got an Echo Audio Fire2 and I wouldn't use anything else(other than a larger echo sound card).
