I am looking for a notebook cooler to use on my lap for extended periods of time. My laptop is the 14 inch m14x alienware.

I noticed that a lot of laptop coolers are meant to be used on desks and would cause great discomfort if put on legs for long time.

the one that looks good from my research is the targus lap chill mat.

I would like to hear other opinions before I purchase. thanks.

    It doesn't look like it...

... my suggestion, if you don't mind a passive cooler, would be the Rain Design iLap. You pay a fairly hideous price for a bent piece of aluminium and some velvet, but it does what it says it'll do.

Lapdesk solutions usually get uncomfortable pretty quick. Depending on where and how you intend to be sitting, you may wish to consider a breakfast in bed like tray.

$90? No thank you...I can get the most powerful cooler on the market for $80, shipped.

But for using a laptop on the lap in bed....well, I'd say the best solution would be to have really good airflow, and not block the vents somehow.

    Lol, they shouldn't be called "lap"tops anymore...more like...notebooks. Yeah. :p

Is not good for lap use, its big, heavy, and not flat on the bottom, and it pulls air from the bottom so your lap can easily inhibit the airflow.

iLap is not a cooler its a stand - also still not flat on the bottom in 'lapmode'

lapdawg is not a cooler its a stand. It's also very expensive.

The best answer is the Cooler Master Notepal Infinite

Amazon.com: Cooler Master Notepal Infinite Notebook Cooler Black with Silver Mesh- (R9-NBC-BWCB-GP): Electronics

    It's cheap @$35.00

It has a totally flat bottom so it has maximum surface area for comfort and stability on your lap.

Also it pulls air in from the back of the cooler not the bottom so while in use on your lap or in bed it wont block the airflow to the cooler.

The first one the OP posted also looks pretty good.

The standoff is how it dissipates heat. Ergo, cooler. And if it's on a lap, flat is a disadvantage.
