The three externals I've had so far are still running great. The western digital passport is still running after 3 or 4 years, seagate go is almost at a year, and I just got a toshiba a few weeks ago. I don't run these everytime though, I mainly use them for media players and storage.

The WD Passport line is like a defacto standard. Plus you can get them all the way up to 1TB.

Samsung make some nice external 2.5" HDDs. I've gone off WD since one at work died at 5 months old. It was 250GB and decided to become 2TB, but was unreadable.
However, my preference for the external drives is to buy the HDD and the enclosure separately. Some enclosures offer eSATA which gives much faster access (for a compatible computer) and USB 3 is just about here. The ready-made portable HDDs all have the USB interface built in, which saves a few $$$s but means that one cannot use the full speed of the HDD.

yeah, e sata would be nice.

Personally I use Freecom's Toughdrives. They're rubber-armoured, I figure if they're going to be actually portable driver, they might as well be able to resist a few knocks.
Whats a good brand for portable hard drives?
