HP and Canon are generally perceived as being the "best" for general use. Epson is also good if you buy their high end printers (i.e. R1800). They actually are the best in print quality for photos, but you have to be into photography to justify it.

I've wanted to buy a B/W laser printer or even a colour one for school but I havent seen one for under $80 CDN, about $70 USD, but I may push my budget since I can't be cheap on such an important item.

I;ve heard good things about Brother printers, any good?

HP Deskjet 6122 here. HP makes awesome printers, I won't buy any other brand. :hp:

I once had a Dell printer (AKA Lexmark) - that was a P.O.C.!! I'll never buy one of those again.

I have a brother laser printer that I bought on eBay for about $80. It is a really good, fast, and small printer. The HL-2040, it is worth checking out. I chucked my ink hungry Lexmark Multifunction for this one. It is awesome.

Any laser printer. Can't afford to print on an Ink-jet when my HP Laser-jet 4 gets about 5,000 pages on a $100 cartridge.

Yea, that exact model is what I'm looking at. $70 CDN after mail in rebate isn't bad...

Epson C86 InkJet and Samsung ML-1710 LaserJet. I started with a C80. Epson has replaced it three times even though the warranty ran out years ago and I think I paid like $25 for the original. I think they just want me to buy the cartridges. Samsung also fixed my printer after warranty ran out. How's that for service?

I'm a convert to Canon. My Canon Pixma MP780 is easily the best multifunction I've ever had.

I owned several HP multifunctions, but they were unreliable, huge, and replacement cartridges cost over $30. HP also encodes their cartridges to expire at a given time, regardless of whether they're empty. It's caused something of a controversy for HP.

That bugs me and prevents you from buying in bulk when there's a good deal.

Agreed. That encoding is pure B.S.

I had one of those Presario 2800 notebooks, too. I loved it and never understood why they got away from that design. It worked great until an unfortunate incident with a bottle of Mountain Dew in late 2002.

Mine survived a drop caused by a defective Targus notebook case. The only casualties were a hard drive failure about a year later and a half broken sound card which I've elegantly replaced. :) (check sig)

I had an HP and it was the worst POS ever. it wasted paper and was always messed up, and eventually somehow jammed the moving ink cartridge holder inside of itself. i will never buy hp again!

I just got and Okidata B4250, and i like it very much. the problem is finding ink cartridges for it

Not sure about the Brother printers sucking. I have had the HL-2040 for almost 2 and half months and haven't ran out of toner yet and no paper jams. I have printed about 300 pages so far. Its awesome for printing text in black and white.

But I had a Lexmark before this one and that one did suck big time. I had to constantly clean the cartridge because it would always dry up and mess up my prints and I had to buy ink cartridges after less than a hundred pages. I spent more on the printer in less than 2 months than I have altogether for the Brother.

Agreed. I had a Lexmark just last year - I almost threw it out. I had the one that Dell rebranded - an all-in-in-one. It was a top loading printer - sometimes it sucked in the entire stack of paper. Also, it printed out the pages crooked....glad to be rid of it.

So, I went back to HP...Deskjet 6122 works just great. Had it for about 9 months, and I have only replaced the ink cartridges once!

Xerox. They make awesome laser printers.

Xerox N4525 is the one I choose last year for my workgroup of 6 people. I am working on getting a color Xerox laser printer to replace our POS Lexmark color laser printer. It takes 5 mins for the first sheet to come out of any print job regardless if the machine is warmed up or not.

I can only share my experience. I had a Brother HL-1050 Laser Printer, which worked very well, but at some point it developed this issue of having three black dots printed on every page, that no cleaning would fix. Then at some point (albeit after a long while) it just started printing dirty pages that no cleaning and no service would fix. So I ended up disappointed.

I now have a Xerox Phaser 3210 laser printer, which is excellent, given its age. It doesn't provide the same resolution and print quality as the huge office HP laserjets and probably won't match modern laser printers too, but it's still very good, fast, very compact, works flawlessly with my print server, has LPT and USB connections and emulates HP Laserjet models, so no problems with drivers.

I also have an HP Officejet 5510 All-in-one, which I'm pretty satisfied with. I've witnessed some people having problems with it, like the drivers/software CD simply wouldn't install. Weird.

i have a epson RX600 and it does well. I will say HP does make good laserjet printers (have had one in the family since early 90s). Though i think their inkjets are some of the worst stuff out there. I have seen canons used a lot as well with good results.

I agree with pt9386: Brother makes great printers. I have a 5170DN, and it's awesome. I've never had a paper jam, the blacks are as black and sharp as any hp I've ever used, graphics are crisp, even tiny type is perfectly clear and readable, and it's cheaper than hp -- duplexing *and* network-ready for $300, what hp charges for their non-networked model. Plus the Brother has lower consumables costs.

I bought mine on a recommendation from a friend who has a 2000-series (can't remember the exact model #) that she uses in her business -- *lots* of printing every single day -- and she loves it. Maybe Brother has gotten better over the years, or maybe the 1000-series was designed to be a cheap POS, but in any case, I'd recommend both the 2000- and 5000-series very highly!

I wish to comment that HP priters' alignment are always a bit slanted.. niligible when you print single sided, but noticeable when you print double-sided.
