 I have 2 little fans here want to put inside my laptop, cuz it fits. I wonder where you can get a 3 pin to usb adapter, or any guide on how to mod one?

I think one wire is +, the other - and the thrid is the tach reading wire.
You can leave the tach wire disconnected.

The two outer pins on a USB port are + and -. So just connect your fan to those pins and it should work.

Remember that a USB port can only supply 5V and 500mA.

EDIT: here is a pinout for the fan:

    EDIT#2: pinout for USB port:

    How small are your fans?

    Thanks for the link!

Two 60mm fans with LED connected on one 3 pin. Will it over power & burn the usb? I also find there's mini-sized 3 pin connector on my motherboard laptop, but it won't fit.

If the fan draws more than 500mA it would cause problems, but I think most fans need much less than 500.
    Should be fine.

Do you have a ~5V battery?

You could test it with a battery to find the + and GND.

glad to see there is a recent post like this!
I was about to make a thread myself!!
Anyways, the desktop fan that I'm using is 0.3A which is good, but it is 12V. Being the explorer and risk taker I am, I decided to plug that into my USB to see what would happen and my whole laptop turned off. After a few minutes (and after freaking out) I was able to turn it back on.

Would this have done any physical damage to my notebook? I know this only support upto 5V so putting in a 5V fan with less than 0.5 A be good enough to run a DIY cooling pad project?

    Thanks!

btw, here's the setup I started using recently

There's a fan inside the box. With this, I just hit my record lowest in idle temperature! 42 C!! When normally, idle is 60C for this notebook.

And if you can please answer my question above, it'd appreciated :)

I once shorted out my USB port, after I restarted the notebook, it worked fine.

I also attached a 12V fan to my usb port, the fan didn't spin, but there were no problems.

I don't know if it's bad or not.

I properly insulated the fan, and it works now.
I have another question. About how much of a difference will there be if I connect a 12v fan to a 5v power supply?

It will make the 12V fan to a 5V fan. Less power meaning that it will run at a at lower RPM and probably affects its performance.

5V fans are designed to run at that voltage. Running a 12V fan at 5V will actually get you worse performance.

I think that fans are made available in laptop accessories store. Just make sure to choose the best fan. Its okay to choose the most affordable but don't sacrifice the quality it can give to your laptop.
