Im on a hunt for a new TV. I sold my Sony Bravia KDL-37v4500 as i wanted something better and full HD. It will be used as both a TV and an external screen for movies, work and some gaming.
    I figure plasma is still the best, so im trying to decide between two TVs that fall within my budget now;
    Panasonic TX-P42S30E
    LG 50PV350

Which would you choose and why?

I was going to buy the LG 50PV350 myself , but it only has two hdmi sockets , one on the back and one on the side, so i decided to get the 50PK590 as it has four hdmi sockets , though i am having problem getting my xbox 360 to work via hdmi.

If you are going to do a lot of gaming or plugging your notebook into the tv you will be better of with a lcd tv, as plasma can get burn-in.

Didnt they practically eliminate the burn-in on plasmas a while ago?
Also i only need 1 HDMI as i have an HDMI switch that automatically switches between active signals so 2 is more than enough for me.
So from the two which would you take? I heard the VIERA plasma from Panasonic is the best quality as they make everything themselves including the panels... It is 8" smaller though...

Burn in is not as bad as it use to be, but it is still recommended to not game or watch movies with black bars or channel`s with static logo`s for at least 100-200 hours some say 1000hrs

I am only around 45hours into my burn in on my LG 50" PK590 , and i am watching everything with zoom to fill the screen.

If you want more info see the thread below.

I dont know about the tv`s you are looking at, but i would get the biggest screen you can.

Also the Sharp Elite seems to have a few problems also.

Yes, the current technology makes it all but a non issue. Plasma sets make the best choice if you like to watch movies. Decide which of your priorities is most important, and then buy the set that suit your need best. Also keep in mind the requirements of your computer and anything you connect to it. Make sure they are compatible.

Parents just got a Samsung UN55D6500 for a little under $1600 CDN and it's awesome. The other main contenders were the LG LW5700 and Sony EX720. If you don't need wifi or 3D, FS had the D6000 model for $1000 CDN the other day. I personally still prefer plasmas for movies in a dark room but my parents wanted something a bit thinner and were willing to spend the extra money.

the OP stated that plasmas were still the best. the new king in picture quality is the Sharp Elite, which is an LED LCD.

those problems in the video should be gone after a firmware update...hopefully. :p keep in mind that the sharp elite was JUST released, so those are tiny problems. we also have no idea what kind of settings the guy had on his tv. there could have been some conflicting settings that were being used. i really hate that he used winnie the pooh as a test movie. he should have used a newer blu ray title with better CGI to test out such a fantastic tv.

I did 6months of research over at the semi OCD/fanatical AVS forum before making my decision 2 years ago lol....Bought a Panasonic plasma for the living room (projector in the office) after finding that it was basically the best plasma made after the mega buck Pioneer Kuro (discontinued).

I bought the 720p version and everything from DVDs to OTA digital TV signals look amazing. No burn in issues (hard to shake that old reputation!) after 2 years and no issues at all.

I'm going to buy another for the bedroom soon in fact....

I bought the LG 50PX950 about 4-5 months ago. Best TV I have ever owned. The only mistake I made was because it was 3D which I use very little so it cost a bit more. But its a great TV.

Is 3d Tv worth having, I have yet to see one, having to wear the glasses is not very appealing.

Gucci 3D Aviators    i would so have a few pairs of these if there were active shutter glasses. :(

yes and no, depending on which type of 3d u are interested in. i would say yes to active 3D because active 3d (shutter 3D glasses) produces such a beautiful 3D image. my Samsung PN59D7000's 3D completely obliterates the theater's passive 3D. the detail, clarity, and 3D depth is incomparable.

the beauty of the PN59D7000 is that i can convert any 2D program to 3D. i'm not just limited to 3D blu rays. although i don't condone it, u can also download 3D torrents and play them back through your laptop/PC for free.

all that being said, 3D is still a pretty niche segment. me, personally, i'm addicted to the finer things in life so i don't mind dishing out the extra pennies at all. as for the general consumer, there will always be a battle between a product's performance to price ratio.

Or depending on where the TV will be and your space, do like I did and skip the TV and buy a 720p LED projector. No color wheel, lamp, rated for 20-30k hours and runs around $5-700. I'm running a 70" screen above my computer desk for movies, etc and a small 20" monitor on the desk for when I prefer it.

However, as soon as my wireless backlit keyboard comes in, that may change too lol...just a thought :D

True, and for a paltry $500,000 you too can have one in your living room. Have you put down your deposit yet?
