I would buy a printer whose tanks can be replaced separately. Until the HP 8250 came out, they were notoriously wasteful in that you had to replace the whole cartridge if one color ran out. Just keep ink costs in mind because cheaper models tend to end up being more expensive than mid-tier models that use ink more effectively.

I have a DeskJet 6122 - great printer. Prints fast, and the pictures aren't bad for an inkjet. ;)

I've had a Canon Pixma MP780 since early summer. It's great and I'll be hard pressed to go back to HP again. The MP780 is a compact multifunction and can be had for around $200 - $250. The print quality is superb. A big plus is that it uses separate ink tanks for each color. Replacement tanks are only $11.95 each. Compare that to HP's expensive ink tanks that are encoded to expire whether they are empty or not, forcing you to replace them. Here's the site for the MP780: http://consumer.usa.canon.com/ir/controller?act=ModelDetailAct&fcategoryid=123&modelid=10444

I just set up a Pixma 1500. I thought it was pretty good and cheap. Canons are known to be miserly with the ink.

I prefer Canon printers, having used Epson, HP and a current Brother.

Used a very basic Canon Bubblejet in between and it was the most cost effiecient.
