I am interested in purchasing an external device to play music or listen to dvd movies via my laptop. I have a Dell 9100, 128 ATI card, and 512 ram. I would like the device to run off the USB port.

    Any suggestions would be appreciated.

    Thanks!

I'm not sure I understand...you want a mass storage device?

I am interested in an external speaker system to listen to music or dvd movies. I find that the internal speakers for my Dell 9100 do not produce enough sound for me.

    Thanks!

Oh, the way you stated the first post it sounded like you wanted something to store files on. Anyway...do you want portable or stationary speakers?

It depends on your setup. Alot of portable speaker sets plug right into the Headphone minijack on your laptop. You can find little 'boxy' speakers that require D batteries. They are a little bulky and the sound quality varies from manufacturer to manufacturer. You can also check out video game stores. I found a nice set of speakers that were marketed for handheld game machines. What is cool about it is that the plug is molded into the speakers themselves, so it's one solid unit. The bass and treble responses are quite decent.

There are really a variety of portable speaker systems. Really, you have to go and look at them and see what strikes your fancy.

    Thank!

I found a few sound devices that are just right. Creative has a few USB Sound Blaster cards that are made for laptops. I am looking at the Audigy 2 NX as a possible choice. Reviews have been good. Now I need to match the device with a set of 5.1 speakers.

I tried the connector for the headphones and connected an old stereo speaker set by harman kardon. The speakers sound alright and I can control the volume. I'm thinking of moving on to a better sound system with 5.1 since I see dvd movies on my laptop and would like to enjoy the sound that they provide. I believe USB is the way to go. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
