I've got my buffalo 500 GB portable, external hard drive connected to my router now and the light and activity shows it's constantly working even though I'm not transfering any files to and from the drive at the moment. I assume this means my hard drive is not going to last very long.

Is there a hard drive that will power down when not in use (even when connected to a router that is always in use) and instantly power back up without me having to turn it on manually once someone trys to access the drive?

There's a lot of Black Friday sales right now. Are there specific words I can look for in the product description to get this feature (i.e. ecostorage if that's what I'm looking for)?

    thanks.

I have a Toshiba Canvio and it powers down when not in use. It is always plugged into my computer and the light turns off and stops flickering after a short duration of not being in use. Although, when I go to use it again, it takes about 5-10 seconds for the drive to turn back on and be usable.
