I'm planning on getting an external mobile HDD (w/o power source) for my PB, and I have narrowed it down to two.
One is G-DRIVE mini COMBO (FW 400 & USB 2.0) and the other one is LaCie Mobile HDD.
I'm kinda hesitant to get either one because G-Tech HDDs seem little bit over-priced, and I have read lots of bad reviews on Lacie HDDs.
Should I take my chance on Lacie or just go with G-Tech?

Why don't you build one yourself. Pick up an enclosure that you like and then add as much HDD space as you need. Cheaper and you get to select all the components.

Definitely put one together yourself. You didn't state the prices of the ones you are considering, but two weeks ago I bought a 2.5 inch Fujitsu 40-gig ($63 w. 3-yr warranty) and put it in a usb case ($10).

One more vote for 'build your own'. I put an 80 Gb Fujitsu drive in a MacAlly PHR-250CC. It has both USB 2.0 and FireWire 400. $135. Beats $175 for a LaCie 80 Gb.

Of couse you should put one together.. you get to choose what brand of HDD you want, space and rotation speed. And with the casing, you get to choose a design. And its cheap. Why should you go for commercial ones? commercial ones are the same thing.
