I need 3.5" SATA. I've found a few with high reviews on Newegg.

Which one should I get? (You can suggest another one not listed if you want)
Also, a question -- what's the difference between SATA I and SATA II? Does it matter when it comes to enclosures?

Pick any that you are comfortable with, and one that is within your budget.
The difference between SATA I and II is the transfer rates.
SATA I = 150Mb/s
SATA II = 300Mb/s -
the last two is not in stock

Icy Dock - no question
But do you actually need a firewire connection?
If you don't particularly need firewire... I'd suggest an enclosure with USB 2.0 and eSATA - i.e. this Icy Box MB664US-1SB (just $45 after $20.00 mail-in rebate), would be a much better idea.
eSATA speeds far exceed both USB 2.0 and firewireLast edited by a moderator: May 8, 2015 -
Harddisks connect to the converter with 3 different types of connections i have listed in increasing order of transfer speed:
1. IDE (found on 2.5" laptop external HD's )
2. SATA (found on most laptops)
3. eSATA (found on new laptops) -

Can't recommend it enough! -
The first one has a better review, but is more expensive.

As far as your 3.5" external HDD enclosures go, I like Icy Box, their products are well built and very nice. I suggest the Icy Box IB-390STUS-B. Please see the link for a review of the product.

I have 2 of these and if I could find more of them in Ireland I would be on them like a shot. I got 2 more for my mates and they love them.

X-craft 350 model. I have the black one's with firewire daisy-chain (2 ports) in addition to USB 2 B port with a 2-port USB 2 powered hub on the rear with power switch. The build quality is fantastic as all thick aluminium, the cooling is perfect with a mesh underside (passive cooling so no fan noise but no heat build-up), stand vertical or horizontal, all the firewire and USB cables included with backup software. The front coolermaster logo is a backup button as well. Very fast and completely stable. They also have an internal suspension system and can accept 2.5" drives without any modification and the drive installs are toolless and secure.
One thing I really like and I don't know if this happens on all drives but if I unplug the firewire from my MBP it immediately is seen and attached via usb 2 back on the pc without having to keep re-arranging and plugging more cables. -
Personally, I prefer Apricorn. Excellent build quality with usb and esata.
