I'm trying to decide between the Brother HL-2140 ($89.99 after rebate) and the HL-2170w ($99.99). I'd like to stay within $100-120 if possible.. lower is obviously better for a college student budget. These printers have both received good reviews on Amazon; I was just wondering if someone had any input?

I've never used that brand of printer, but judging from the reviews on amazon, it seems to be pretty solid.

They are quite expensive, but are worth it if you print a lot. One toner lasts forever, but ink cartridges need to replaced all the time (if you print a lot). You can easily end up spending the same or more on ink cartridges for an ink jet printer than for a toner for the amount of pages it lasts for.

Price your toner cartridges - often times it is well worth your money to spend a little more on the printer and get less printing costs later. If you need black and white only, a decent laserJet costs a small fraction as much to run, prints quickly, provides better quality, doesn't bleed, and more. I got my $400 laserjet for half off, and it was the best investment I have made in years.

I really like the Brother's printers cuz they are cheap and the starter toner can last for a while. I have the DCP-8040. A cheap one which is pretty good. I bought it at Costco for like $98

    +1 for a brother printer!!!

i own HL 5250DN which has duplex printing which allows me to print on both sides of a sheet of paper and has networking which also allows me to print with out wires off my laptop.

Shop on Ebay lol I have a Samsung ML-2010 and the toner replacement is $35 for 5000 prints.

Also look around for rebates because some laser printers are often less than $50.
