so, i just sold one old ipod, and one broken ipod on ebay, and have $120...
so, i am waiting until cashback goes back to 20-30%... but was there anything specifically wrong with the 3rd gen nanos? the price diff between the 3rd gen and the 4th gen are minimal ($20) but i think i prefer the size of the 3rd gens, and really don't have a need for the "nanochromatic" features...

what do you guys think? (and dont tell me to not get an ipod).

Well, cover flow is laggy on the 3rd-gen... while it's pretty smooth on the 4th-gen IMO. On the 3rd-gen I just consider cover flow a gimmick, but on the 4th-gen it's actually cool.

And I was never a big fan of the "split-screen" UI on the 3rd-gen...

And I've heard claims over at head-fi.org that the fourth-gen sounds better than the 3rd-gen, although you'll probably need good earphones to notice... and if you're going for best sound quality, you may want to look at other stuff besides the Apple ipods...

And while the screens are the same size, the vertical orientation of the screen in the 4th-gen lets them use the screen more efficiently, so they can use bigger fonts.

And the 4th-gen I think supports voice-recording if you get some special earphones that have a microphone built-in... and I don't think the 3rd-gen has that...

But none of these things are actually anything really wrong with the 3rd gen...

I think mostly people just like the shape of the 4th gen, and maybe the additional color options, and the fact that it's newer. And of course there's the 16gb version available in the 4th-gen.

But if you're going for a 3rd-gen ipod nano, I'd look at Sansa Fuze instead. It looks more or less like a 3rd-gen nano, but it's way cheaper, and better in most ways. Great sound, great battery life, expandable memory (microSDHC), FM radio, voice recorder. And best of all you don't need the iTunes software. On the downside, it's a bit heavier, and the device UI is alright but not quite up to Apple's. And you'll save like 50 bucks or so.
