Hi, I have a 17" laptop, measured 16"(W)x11.5"(D)x1.66"(H). I want the sleeve for extra protection against scratches and maybe shock. I will put the sleeve in a regular backpack. I have narrowed down to the following sleeves:

    TomBihn Size 2XL, it won't ship till mid-march :( $30
    http://www.tombihn.com/page/001/PROD/300/TB0374

    Booq PowerSleeve XXL $64.95
    http://www.booqbags.com/Detail.bok?no=57

    SFbags $42.00 + $15 flap = $57
    http://www.sfbags.com/products/sleevecases/sleevecases.htm

Various 17" sleeve on Ebags.com, such as Sumdex ImpactGuard Insert Sleeve 17" http://www.ebags.com/sumdex/impactguard_insert_sleeve_17/product_detail/index.cfm?modelid=48890
and SwissArmy Victorinox CS2 17" Cross Suspension Computer Sleeve http://www.ebags.com/victorinox_swiss_army/cs2_17_cross_suspension_computer_sleeve/product_detail/index.cfm?modelid=69119

    Thanks very much for helping!

Out of the ones ou listed I'd go with the sumdex. I have one and its just so nice and slim. I like that it has a little handle, and a zipper, I think the Tombihn has velcro. I hate hearing that velcro sound, especially when I'm 20 min late for class and i'm trying to seek in the back row of seats. The booq ones look to bulky with that big phat buckel. Keep in mind though that it will do a great job of stoping scratches but it won't be a major shock absorber. So depending on weather or not you back pack is made for carrying a laptop you might want to check out the monolith sleeve at tombihn.com. I use the monolith with the tombihn brainbag, that combo offers great protection.

Also you should check out www.shaggymac.com for a lil shammy to stop your keys from hitting your screen. Ever seen a notebook screen with keymarks on it?

Having just gone through the same with my new Sager NP5720-V I know how you feel.
I actually ended up getting a neoprene cover for the 17" Sony Vaio, made by Sony. It is a stretchable and very soft cover with a zipper. Neoprene is waterproof which is a nice added feature.
It goes for about $ 25.00 bucks and I bought mine at MicroCenter.
My Sager has roughly the same dimensions as yours, so it should fit.
    Good Luck
