I never had either before. I want to make the laptop lean so it would be easier to type. Also I use my laptop a lot on my bed so both would prevent the laptop over heating.

I normally would get the cooling pad but i'm worried the fans would make it too loud and it would use up too much of the laptop's battery.

What do you guys think? Any you recommend and where may I buy some?

Raising the back of your laptop 3/4" to an inch will help decrease temperatures by increasing the effective suction power of your fans, by increasing passive cooling strategies.
I have used a book in the past to prop my laptop up.

You can buy foldable laptop feet. They kinda look like large keyboard feet, but they do the job.
I have used rubber grommets on my own laptops. I get them at my local hardware store. They are generally used for power washers and engine dampners. I connect them to my laptop with rubber cement. Hot glue works too

i suggest a laptop stand just to tilt the laptop your way and keep the heat off your lap. i use my laptop on the bed alot too and got this laptop stand that has a tilt to it so its not hot and keeps the laptop cool and quiet, bought it from big lots, for 13$

DIY laptop stand, unless your laptop is running hot.

Come to think of it now, I would like to get a laptop stand for the improved ergonomics. I don't really put the laptop on my lap but a lot times put it on my bed. So a laptop stand would make it so much easier for typing. the question is where can I buy a good one for a 15.6" laptop?

Stop use your laptop on the bed, that will makes your laptop will getting hot quickly.
If you worried about noisy cooling pad, you can find the quiet one, this is one of them
    http://www.dealsvista.com/deal/laptop-foldable-aluminum-cooling-pad-with-three-quiet/30944

All of cooling pad requires supply power from laptop, so you can charge your laptop while use it.
