    I bought a WD... only 400Gb (750GB and 1TB weren't available a year ago)
I like it a lot. Not loud. But with 1TB some noise should probably be expected. Bestbuy has sales all the time on the Western Digital hard drives.

And western digital has Firewire and USB. With mine Firewire is a lot faster. I only have ~100GB of free space on mine. At least this way you will have the choice.

I have always been a fan of segates and WD just based on experience. They have never let me down yet.

thanks for the opinions guys. I have always used hitachi and ibm hard drives which is why I was leaning a bit more towards the hitachi, but the firewire gives me something to think about.

I'd say go with the Hitachi - many reviews show it is much quieter and cooler compared to Seagate's smaller 750GB offering. While Seagate also has a 1TB I have yet to see it in stores. It has 1/2 the cache and 4 platters whereas the Hitachi has 5 and 32 MB cache. Another offering is Samsung's 1TB, with supposedly 3 platters / 16 MB cache. However, like the Seagate I have yet to see it anywhere.

I was initially thinking about purchasing a smaller network drive but after reading that the avg read/write times were 5MB/s, i ran away. The hitachi is looking better to me and I will be using USB 2.0 99.9% of the time. Later on down the line I may purchase a router that will allow the connection of USB harddrives to convert them into networkable drives.

Thanks for the opinions all, I'm going to snag up a hitachi
