    Hi.

    I have an Samsung SCX-4200

I am still on the original supplied toner, approx 1000 pages, I have only printed 250 according to the printers memory.

I only print text, mostly webpages and pdf manuals.

I have tried shaking the toner to distribute it, and checked for dirt.

Is my toner cartridge empty or is their something wrong?

    thanks

    John.

The first thing to check is the drum, which is probably integrated with the toner cartridge (though maybe not). So try replacing the toner cartridge and see if the problem goes away. Next up would be the fuser, which would require an RMA or being repaired otherwise.

Hi everybody, I' ve been hearing that buying a laser printer saves you more money than an inkjet ever will. But it seems prohibitive because of the high cost cost of the printer and toner. Then, there are health risks involved. Is it really more economical (or healthy) to buy a laser printer? I really need your advice. How much do I save by buying a laser printer as opposed to an inkjet?

toner is sealed in a drum, their is no health risks of having a laser printer.
You need to stay away from certain ones, like solid toner printers, because they need to always be plugged in, to keep the toner warm, which definitely hurts the electric bill. I personally think the best laser printers are the slightly older Lexmark Commercial ones.
Their cartridges last about 30,000 sheets
so you never really have to replace the toner unless you are working from home or in an office where you print that many sheets of paper.
It is much more economical to get a laser printer. The starting costs are high, but the toner really is not all that expensive in comparison to inkjet printers.

I think your best bet may be to look for a used laser printer like a Lexmark optra S 1650, or 1850, or 2450.
I have a Optra S2450 and it has run for years without problems.
It fell from a table about 4 ft in the air, and it fell on the ground, and it still works. Keep in mind the printer is like 80lbs. The old optra S line is built like tanks.

I second that they are more economical. I got my printer for $200, after 2 $100 MIR. Even with toner, I have spent only about $400 on the printer in 5 years, and I have printed about 12,000 pages on it.

I got my printer from my library for $25, and I have printed about 5,000 pages on it, and the toner cartridge still weighs like 6 lbs, so I should have a few thousand pages left.

The old lexmark's never die, I have two of them, and they never have any problems.
I have experienced other brands, and i have to say Hp makes some really bad consumer printers, but their commercial ones are pretty good. Xerox makes great printers, but they are awfully expensive.
