Ok, im looking at buying a "handheld PC" like Ipod TOuch and Archos 604. I want to use it in a few specific public places, but i dont know if there is WiFi that I can find there. I want a gadget that will tell me if there are any networks (unsecured) that I can use. I looked at this : http://www.x-tremegeek.com/templates/SearchDetail.asp?productID=14533&ta=detail_img&pi=Y&st=5
But im not sure if thats what i want, and its more than i wanted to spend, can anyone clarify its the right thing and/or find it cheaper
? thanks in advance.

There are a bunch of little gadgets you can use to check if there is WiFi, and more importantly if they are secured networks. You can use a laptop with netstumbler, and in a second I will post some little key chain gadgets to use as well. Good luck.

My suggestion is the Targus WiFi Scanner ACW20US. It MSRP is $60, but you can get from newegg.com for about $46. It shows signal type, strength, security, and other details on its LCD. Pretty useful in my opinion
heres the link,

Also try looking around the web, you can find some pretty good ones from belkin, iogear, and some OEMs. -
