    Hello All,

Well, my Sager 5793 is in the mail and I have a question regarding cooling. I have heard these stay relatively cool (especially with the new casing). My question is - from a preventative maintenance point of view, is it still worth it to get a cooling pad? I don't mind spending the money if it could potentially add longetivity to my notebook. Should I consider getting a Zalman or is it really overkill to get a cooling pad period. Thanks in advance for any advice.

Having a cooling pad will benefit in the long run, because having components constantly under heat will shorten its life time.

I don't use one for my 5791. It barely gets warm to the toutch so I figured I didn't need one. With the 5793 having the 8800m, yea it might be worth it to get a cooling pad

If you leave your notebook on for long periods of time at a single location, then a cooling pad would be a good investment. If you bring it around to different areas other than your desk, then no and just get a board or a flat surface to place the notebook on so the airflow doesn't get blocked.

I've bought a Dell 1530, and live in Brisbane Australia.

It's currently sitting at a very hot 36 degrees on this lovely Saturday.

I reckon I should get a cooling pad, just for that reason alone.

Otherwise, I flat, and would like to watch movies in my room. Can the Zalman's function decently, say on a bed? I mean alone. Or should I buy a flat surface, to put the Cooler on as well?

I know that the Zalman Cooler will work on flat surfaces, and work on carpet etc.

EDIT: Don't worry about Battery life. I have no intention of not plugging it in with the cooler.

There are several benefits to a cooling pad.
    1. It will drop the temp in your laptop not only reducing problems with overheating, but also allowing the internal fans to potentially run at a slower speed (some notebook fans at high speed are fairly loud).
    2. Keeps dust/debris from being sucked up into the notebook. Only an issue on some notebooks & depends on location on intakes and the environment you're working in...was an issue with my old Dell XPS which I'd have to open up and clean out after leaving it on my carpet or lab bench too long.
    3. Keeps your lap from getting too hot.

I always use a notebook cooler and have found them very useful.

While we're on the discussion of the zalmans, what's the difference between the nc1000 and nc2000 besides "it's just a newer model" surely there's something that's changed.

The NC2000 is bigger - its created for 17-20 inch notebooks. Since it is bigger it has an inbuilt USB cable storage compartment, and feet to raise the back higher.
The NC1000 is the smaller version created for smaller systems, typically 15" and below.

Ive got my NC2000 on order, but it seems to be out of stock everywhere! Ive ordered anyways, and am trying to limit gaming on my laptop until it arrives - on the 14th March!

Anyways, a cooler is always a good idea. It will prolong the life of the laptop, and a cooler laptop also runs better, hence the reasons why servers are kept in their own Air Conditioned rooms.

If you feel your laptop is hot to the touch, then I would defo recommend a cooler. Not only will it push cooler air into the intake vents, but will cool other components that do not have their own seperate cooling, like the HDD's for example. Many people forget that the HDD/s run very hot as well........

I seem to remember seeing a picture somewhere a while back of an XPS M1730 perched on a silver Zalman NC-1000 cooler.

Looked funny! Seemed to sit ok... You wouldn't be getting cooling over the whole area of the notebook, so I dunno if its worth it. Plus it looks kinda stupid having this massive 17" performance laptop perched on this little grey cooler :D

I'd hold out for the NC-2000 guys...

If you read the comments on newegg alot of 17 inch owners it fits nicely and 15.4 it fits well. I got the nc1000 on order and its coming monday for my c90.
