I just bought a Z96J for cheap off an online auction. It comes with an adapter, but I also have the Dell Slimline adapter (for e1505, e1405 etc) laying around. Are the two compatible? It would be nice to have a spare adapter. I haven't even seen my Asus yet, so I'm assuming the plugs are compatible, but I'm mostly wondering about power specs. I don't want to plug something in and fry a thousand dollar toy.

No, they probably will not be. Power adapter connects vary company by company, and even if they did not it is very likely the power specs would be just different enough to screw something up.

Okay, thanks for the info. Warning heeded.

The specs on the power for the Asus adapter are
Output: 19 V DC, 4.74A, 90W Input: 100—240V AC, 50/60Hz universa
For the Dell PA10 / PA12 90W are
Output: 19.5VDC 4.62A 90W
The power specs are probably close enough (approx 5%), but there are at lease 2 other considerations,
Pin / Plug size - the center pin of the plug has to be the right size to contact the conductor inside the computer. The outer wall of the plug has to be the right size to fit and also make contact. Different computers usually vary on these specs.
Polarity - usually adapters are -C+ center pin positive and outer sheath ground but as always somebody has to be different....
Good Luck
Will a Dell PA-12 AC adapter work with an Asus Z96j?
