I have a 100gb HD that i keep all my music and movies and big files on. I usually have first plug the HD in then connect it to my PC and i want to be able to just leave it plugged in and just shove a wireless USB thing in whne i want to use it.
this would be like 20-25ft max. My first question is what would be a good one and would the wireless be fast enough to watch movies that are on the HD on my laptop or if i wanted to listen to music thats on the HD on the comp.

Great question - the Belkin CableFree has not come out yet. I am waiting for this solution to hit the market as well, for the same reason (and others). Belkin said back at CES 06 that they would have in July, but that deadline has come and gone...

Oh, and when it comes out (or something similar) it is supposed to use a UWB technology, meaning you will get wi-fi speeds (100Mbps), so presumably you could watch movies and listen to music wirelessly from you HD

    Hi Fitz,

Whether you are capable of listening to music or watching movies totally depends on the amount of data required per second. (I call it bitrate...but I'm sure someone who is more technical would be able to provide the actual terms)

Assuming you are able to successfully set up wireless for your notebook, (That means your connection is stable and doesn't get disconnected) you shouldn't have any problems with music whatsoever.

Watching movies is where the problem lies.
If you're watching High Definition content, it'd be best to try things out using cabled solutions first. They take up a lot of bandwidth and wireless (despite all the marketing talk) simply doesn't provide as much.

What sort of encoding are you looking at?
    Xvid?
    MPEG1?
    MPEG2?

I'd use this mostly for music but once and awhile for movies, video clips. For the movies/vid.clips probably all of the formats for video and most likely .avi or XVID for the movies.
Are you saying that I can do this now without the product mentioned above?
