Through my Macbooks optical out?

I don't generally recommend surround-sound systems for music, but Onkyo generally does make fantastic equipment. You might want to look for a 2.1 setup if music is all you intend to do with it.

If you're after advice on stereos, Head-Fi is definitely the place to go.
Whatever your budget and/or needs, they'll be able to advise you what's best. -
On the other hand, if you plan to use it for both, then it would be ok to get a surround sound system and simply switch to stereo when you wanted to listen to music.
On a personal note, my audiophile nature tends to thwart, all all-in-one speaker setups. They're just too utilitarian for someone of my taste--which is much higher than my bank account buy the way. -
Yup. Or 2.0 can be great too, if the speakers have decent bass.
Especially if your music comes from 2-channel sources (such as CDs), you're not adding much by buying lots of speakers.
If you're using it for movies and games, then you have multichannel sources, and directionality matters more with those applications.
Would this be a good stereo for listening to music?
