Hey, I bought an xbox 360 contoller for microsoft (usb plug instead of regular 360 plug.) If worked fine with my laptop for about a month and then will not be recognized. I read that the reason it stops working with notebooks after a while is because the usb ports often dont have enough power to support the controller and after discharging over time it does not work.

Does anyone know what I need to buy (like a usb extension cord maybe?) that would give it more power?

Some external Hard drives have cords that have 2 USBs on them, maybe something like that to draw more power.

Well just try a different port, if that does not work get a usb hub that has its own power supply (I just got one as some of my external drives are hard to power)

though the 360 controller should not use that much power, all it really needs is a signal and minimal voltage to run the signal circuitous.

by the way, the xbox 360 uses a usb connection, the "pc version" is exactly the same as the normal one. You may also invest in a wireless version of it, the controller runs off batteries and the computer only has to power the wireless adapter, but that shows you how little power the controller needs 2 AA batteries runs it for a very long time.

So unless your usb port just totally sucks and has almost no power due to being broken it should not be an issue.

My external hard drive only has the small usb plug so that wont work. I would buy a wireless one but seems like a waste after spending $40 on this one. I have 4 USBs on my Asus F8 notebook and none of them work. It wont work on any notebook (of the 3 that I tried.) I do not have a desktop to try it . Is there a difference between notebook usb ports and desktop ones?

There should be no difference between notebook and desktop USB ports. Might just be the controller has died or something.

try different controllers, try different ports. Check if that port is still working, and if so maybe check usb controller settings in device manager... maybe...

The usb ports all work with everything else. I guess Ill try to check it with a different power supply usb sometime. Ive checked the settings many times and installed and re-installed the drivers for the controllers.

Maybe it is the controller and microsoft screwed me again.

    Thanks for all your help

do you own an iPod wall charger or other wall powered USB socket? stick it in that for a while.
sorry for the stupid questions, but is your wired or wireless? im pretty sure the wired controllers do not have internal batteries, so they cannot be "discharging over time"
if its a wireless one, plug it in to charge, and turn it off. it cant consume 5volts of power faster than its getting if its turned off.
