So I ordered an NC-1000 from DirectCanada.com a few weeks back. It arrived to my home address the following week (I was away at university). My father reported testing the cooler out on his desktop, and reported everything was functional: powers up, fan speeds are adjustable with the dial The whole shabang.

I get home today (3 weeks after the package initially arrived), and can't wait to give it a go on my notebook (Windows 7 64-bit), in which the cooler is intended for. I set up (plug the USB cables in), and hit the power button...

    No light. Nothing.

I thought maybe the USB wasn't plugged in properly, so I unplugged and re-plugged each port. This resulted in an immediate shut-down/freeze of my notebook, something I have never encountered before.

So I tried it out on my desktop (Windows XP SP3), and it tells me there is a power surge on the USB port, and the port needs to be reset. Apparently the unit draws too much power?

Did some extensive googling, but came up empty handed.

    Any thoughts?

If two different machines can't run it, it looks defective.

    I would say defective unit.

I've had my ZM-NC2000 running for months now with no glitches.

Thanks for confirming my thoughts guys. Sent in an online RMA request. Waiting for approval. 15% restocking fee = :(

A real shame...I wouldn't have expected something like this to happen, especially from a fairly high-end cooler.

Why would you need a restocking fee, unless you're just returning it and not exchanging it? And high end or not, just about everything has lemons, unless you go _really_ high end, where they test everything super-extensively before they go out. And even then, you're not guaranteed not to have a lemon, since there are always possible defects that don't show up until later... and that's why there are warranties.
