So I just bought a Zalman NC-2000 at the behest of many members of this forum. I'm using it with a Gateway P7805u laptop. I downloaded Rivatuner to check out what kind of temperatures I was getting, and I don't think it's making any difference whatsoever. I was expecting to get at least 10 degrees difference, but instead I'm only getting about 1-4, and it's never constant. In fact, I barely even notice when I'm not using it.
Is this what I paid 70 bucks for, or is it broken?
EDIT: By the way, this post really won't affect what I do with the thing, but it will help decide whether I should try another one.

By the way, what kind of temps do you get when idle or gaming? -
Feel free to have a look at this thread:

It's apparent that the only way to get a temp decrease with the zalman on the nc2000 is to turn it around and prop the back up with something, which I agree is stupid...
I would suggest you exchange it with a Cryo LX -
If you did enough research you would realize a cooler cannot accommodate each laptop design, and you should have figured out whether or not the Zalman NC2000 would align with your vents. The "dumb" idea was just a suggestion, you don't have to get angry at it/the person because he/she was only trying to help.
You should also know a couple of degrees is not bad at all, a good cooler might take off 10C if aligned up right. -
In any case, I went ahead and tried turning it around, and it still had no noticeable affect on my temp. I think it's safe to say that I got a bum cooler. A defective unit which I will have to ship back to Newegg. But if, as you say, I got the wrong cooler for my lappy, it might not be such a bad thing after all. -
i suggest u keep flipping and turning that thing until it turns into a cryo LX. then and only then will u get better results.
all joking aside. try to do a little bit more research and find a cooler that can accommodate yur notebook's vent location. -

Pardon me if this is obvious, but did you turn the fan speed up to max?

I have some pretty weird issues with my NC2000 as well...the "coldness" of it is really inconsistent. Like it will be working amazing for a couple of days, lowering my temps by up to 15c, but then all of a sudden it will stop being cold to the touch and the temps will go back down to what they are without the cooler...and then whenever it feels like it, it will start working again, maybe an hour, maybe a couple of days. It is not effected by room temp at all as I've experienced this cycle within an hour a couple of times, when it stops being cold for a about a half an hour, and returns to normal again without explanation, all the while the fans are still spinning the same regardless...very weird.

Yes, the RPM setting is at max.
And to those who should tell me to do more research before I buy, I saw numerous comments (including quite a few on these forums) on how this cooler worked great with the FX-P Series of laptops, and that this was the one to buy. It might not work quite as well with my particular PC as others might, but it should still do more than nothing. -
Had same experience as you:
Time to mod it: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=358400 -
thats friggin ghetto...kinda effective...but ghetto as hell. lol -

This cooler has never lowered my laptops temp by more than 1c.

Like I always say, "When in doubt, duct tape the s**t out of it."
The result is my GPU runs at a smooth 38 degrees when idle as opposed to 44. When running with a heavy load (i.e. when playing Left 4 Dead), it runs at 64 as opposed to 70. Not quite what I was hoping for, but still much better. Is this what I should expect or should I be able to get more out of it? -
Lol nice duct tape mod. When in doubt . . . whip it out. It being the duct tape.
Zalman NC-2000 not working?
