What's the difference between the 2 models? Which one should I go for my M17x?

U version has a USB hub (3 ports) and power adapter (separate)

Doesnt matter. Both will work great.

Ready to order the NC3000U but can't seem to find a place to buy the power adapter for it. Would rather not, have it running from USB power from my notebook.

I'm having a hard choice also on that decision. The Cryo LX is a proven to work well with the M17x but it's hard to locate a brand new one in-stock.

The Zalman is brand new, so I don't know what to expect from it and how it would work with our notebooks. But it does seem good on paper and it is about $20 bucks cheaper. Hmmm what to decide on.

Zalman makes great coolers and I have heard many great things about them. I would have one myself if I had the funds before I bought a cheaper one, and it works well too.

I would just choose the Zalman, plus its cheaper.

Ya, I decided to place my order for the Zalman NC3000U. Bought it off Buy.com for $52.99 since they had free shipping and used my Bing cash back account also. It said Buy.com cash back was 4-7%. I'll let you guys know how it works. But now I gotta find a retailer selling the DC power adapter for the darn thing.

I don't see why the fan doesn't spin faster if it has its own dedicated power source; I'd get it if it would run at something near 1500rpm, but at only half that? Not interested.

So disappointing to see Zalman use a glossy plastic material on the cooler's trim. The all-aluminum finish on the NC2000 looks a whole lot better

I really think that the cryo might be better. The problem is finding it online, I would have bought it a long time ago if i found it.

the power adaptor is for connecting external usb devices(other than keyboard and mouse) that draw more power to the cooler's 3 usb ports.

The nc3000u takes up 2 usb ports and splits it into 3.

The 220mm fan is usb powered. There is no difference in fan speed since the fan will not utilize the power adaptor.

Me too!!! Moreover the fact is that it is totally overpriced 60 bucks... you gotta be kidding me. The Enermax Aeolus is around 30$ sometimes far less and its the same thing and the new cp003 has a larger fan and supports large notebooks better. Its metal body is also more attractive.

the cryo pushes more air in a more defined space. So if your vents line up with the cryo vents there is gonna be more air pushed but only in that smaller defined space. The zalman distributes it's air over a larger area but doesnt push as much air it spreads it out more instead of concentrating it. If your vents align with the cryo u will get better cooling if they dont you will be better off with zalman simple as that and if ur not sure then u cant go wrong with the zalamn it will work no matter where vents are.

I have the NC3000U with the AC adapter and if I unplug the USB wire the fan keeps spinning. By using the power adapter you only need to take up one usb port on the laptop. That's so the three USB ports on the Zalman are connected to the computer to transfer bits and bytes and not for fan power. Without the AC adapter, the NC3000U takes up 2 USB ports on the laptop.

For more spin, try a 9 volt adapter. Be advised, though, you might damage the motor.

wait...what? u have to dish out an extra $12 bucks a power adapter, on top of the $60 u already spent for the dang cooler?!? wow...

i'm really anxious to see some results cuz the unit itself looks to be a downgrade in a few areas, but carries a much heavier price tag.

I got my NC3000U for $44.99 + $5.00 shipping from TigerDirect. So there is $50 then the power adapter from NewEgg was $12 + $6 shipping. So yes $68 for it delivered to my door. I don't have a Fry's Electronics near by (not even in my state) and Best Buy doesn't carry much in laptop coolers. Nor do the Office stores. I just got it today. I don't have any temp stats yet.

With the NC3000U there is no difference in the temps with or without the fan on. Fan needs to spin faster, so it's time to take out the ten screws on the bottom and see if fan is replaceable by a more powerful one. I tried the Cryo LX, Aerolus, Cooler Master, the G4 Titan Magic Pad and now the NC3000U. I have a Gateway P-7805U and none of the coolers has made a significant difference in temperatures if any. I keep the G4 Titan Magic Pad because it does make a few degrees difference with it's 4 fans and it is thin, light, collapsible into a smaller footprint and fits easily into a backpack or laptop bag. The Titan doesn't have extra usb ports, but will take an AC adapter.

it's really weird, that the cryo LX, gives some gateway users problems for some odd reason. some gateway guys can't seem to fully power the cryo LX, so u could possibly try the AC adapter NZXT sends out to u for FREE.

I used the AC Adapter that NZXT sent me. It didn't make the cooler any better. The Gateway P-7805U vents are at the back on both sides, so I thought the Cryo LX was going to do the trick. I even tried a 12v AC Adapter with the Cryo LX. The fans whirred loudly and fast. The temps went down to acceptible, but I feared that the electric motors might not last at that voltage. I got a refund on the Cryo months ago.

The Zalman NC3000U fan does not get enough air out to the right and left back edges of my Gateway where the CPU and GPU vents are. If all my vents were in the center or I had a 14" laptop instead of the 17", then the NC3000U would do the trick.

yeah, the problem with 1 big fan setups is that there are deadspots, or areas where there's no air being produced, in the center of the fan and around the outer edges of the fan's blades.

u might've been happy with a 9v adapter. it's the compromise between the 5v's silent operation and 12v's crazy speed and noise. the inside of yur laptop, and how it was designed for thermal control, might have something to do with results as well.

I'll try some spacers between the laptop and the Zalman NC3000 and let the air spread out a little wider and then perhaps a 9 volt AC adapter to speed up the fan. Experimentation. One problem with the Zalman is the casing around the fan directs the air straight up. If it could channel it out toward the edges like the cooler master notepal tries to do, it might get some air out to the edges. The cooler master was too small for my 17" I thought, but the air channeling is a good idea and probably does wonders for 14" and perhaps 15" laptops.

There were those on the Gateway forum who thought that most of the fans on these coolers were spinning in the opposite direction of the internal fans in the Gateway and were working against the flow. Maybe.

    Hi,

I currently use the Coolermaster Notepal Infinite and it works with my laptop. I am doing exactly what Penrod wants to try: I use the spacers of my laptop and the rubber ones on the infinite, which gives enough space for a steady airflow.

My question is: in how far is the Zalman nc3000 better than the Infinite? Is it as effective as the Infinite in terms of the air flow and the whole direction? Does it push or suck the air? Does it push/suck the air on the entire underside of the laptop? (Bc I couldnt use a Zalman 2000/1000 so far as my fan is located in the back and the Zalmans didnt have air flow in the back).

Like preston1, I use the Cooler Master NotePal Infinite and I personally like it over other coolers because it has a solid underside thereby making it a bit more comfortable on my lap.

I never did find this new model for sale anywhere online. Just some news about it being unveiled at some expo like 6 months ago. On the Enermax site they only list the cp001 in black and Silver with info that the silver line is being discontinued or something.
