I need a bit of help here guys. for the past 4 months I've been using the logitech Z5 speaker system, which I found to be pretty good. But it up and died on me today. One thing I really loved about it was that it had a little remote which allowed me to control my media player while in my bed. However, USB speakers make me a bit upset, so I won't be buying them again.

So here is what I am looking for:

    1. A set of reasonably priced, 70ish max, speakers. No woofer needed, just 2 speakers would be fine. A volume knob is preferable, but not required.

    2. A pc remote, something simple with pause and play capability, as well as volume controls. That is all the functionality I need out of it, but extras aren't something to make me shy away.

ya'll haven't let me down yet, thanks in advance!

Wouldn't it be better if you had a subwoofer though?

At that price, Logitech X-230 is an alright option, but they have a subwoofer.

I'd rather not pay for one. I don't have room for a woofer really, Plus I am more interested in finding a remote than speakers ATM

For remotes, I always think outside the box :D

I have used my Nintendo Wiimote & now my new Nokia N900 both worked great as media remotes.

I bought a real remote once, a Windows Media Center remote and was very dissapointed by it since it ONLY worked with WMC and WMC did not have the ability to play have of my files due to the odd collection of codecs they use.

For somebody with just MP3 and stuff though it would have been valid.

I sound like a dork but check it out:

Dunno if you have Ultimate, but there's quite a lot of Media Center remotes on fleabay. I've got a few Dell ones which from a quick search goes for $25-ish. I've found the Dell remotes pretty decent. I'm sure there are out-of-box solutions available, but many of those I've found a nerding too far.

Speakers - I guess it's about what sort of power you want. You could try these: http://www.amazon.com/M-Audio-Studi...ce-Speakers/dp/B000SDLNKA/ref=cm_cr_pr_sims_t

Hey now... I've got a WMC remote. Well... I have the receiver for a WMC remote. The remote itself is in a box somewhere. Hooked up to my MythTV media center and I'm using a Harmony remote for it. A WMC is just about the cheapest way to get a functional IR receiver for a computer.

I got a really nice WMC remote, I love the layout and buttons, just happen to hate WMC... it was my plans to make a family friendly functional HTPC and failed flat on its face when it could not play half my movies and didnt support the dual audio or subtitles for the other 1/4th.

For music though its passible, and its worse because I use 64bit so WMC is programed to use only x64 codecs witch there are very few of.

Right now MY N900 has a programable media remote application on it that works as a HID device. I think this is the way to go if you can find a HID bluetooth remote. First and foremost bluetooth has more range and no line of sight issues like IR does, 2nd is that is easy to program via software rather than static based like most IR devices.

Im sure a bluetooth remote is out there, if anything the wiimote works :D but its not plug & play family friendly its tech geek stuff.

But for a geek its perfect you can use the IR to control the mouse and all the buttons and meters for commands.

The Logitech X-230 comes with a little media remote? o_O

Would you guys recommend the X-240 over the X-230?

I dislike the logitech remotes, they don't work the way I need them to, at least the Z5 one didn't.

I found one on ebay that I was willing to risk 15 bucks on. As long as it doesn't accidentally shut down my pc then I should be happy.

As for speakers, I am thinking the z323 or the z320. I suppose I can make room for a subwoofer.
