I'm getting a Vostro 1700 and I would like to know what are some good accessories to get for it.
Currently, I'm thinking about getting these items:
I'm thinking about getting a good Logitech mouse. I think I'll get a HP backpack designed for up to 17", but I couldn't find much of a selection at the local stores. Not too sure about the cooler unit, but I do know that some work great while others don't do anything. (Would I be better off building one?) Not too sure if a lock would be necessary (I always carry valuable portable devices with me in insecure areas) but they're cheap so why not. Any comments?
- backpack-style carrying case
- mouse
- keyboard light (already have)
- cooler unit
- lock
- Bluetooth microphone (already have)
- high impedance headphones (already have)
I ordered a 9 cell battery with the computer. About how long should it last with typical usage? A local electronics store sells general purpose 12v, 12AH AGM battery packs for about $25, which I could connect to an inverter for more power, but I don't know if it would be necessary. (Note that I have lots of experience in electronics and I have even built my own desktop PC.)
I'm using the computer in college and I will most likely bring it to classes. I will mostly use it for time management/scheduling (Sunbird), reference materials, some homework/notes (OpenOffice), as well as fun during free time. I'm most familiar with the Gentoo operating system so that's what I'll be using on it.

The Samsonite Urbanite backpack is worth a look. Targus and Kensington also make good backpacks. Also look at backpacks from Swiss Gear, but they can be pricey.
You have several mouse options, both wired and cordless. Bluetooth mice, such as the Logitech V270 or the new V470, are also good options to consider.
Imho, Vantec and Zalman make the best coolers. The Zalman NC1000 is really good. -

I got a backpack for my 15.4in laptop from ebay, a swiss gear one, for 25 bucks after shipping new. You will probably find some for 17in laptops on ebay too for pretty cheap.
i don't see a lock being necessary, i am going to college too and can't think of a time where i would actually need one. I'm not big on leaving my laptop anywhere while i am not there, except in my locked dorm room. Theres also a vid on youtube about a guy picking a laptop lock, the kind that takes a key, with a toilet paper roll.
17in seems pretty big for packing it to class everywhere, but you seem to know what you're doing. From what i've read a cheap laptop cooler will perform about the same as an expensive one, so either hit a sale or hit up the all powerful ebay.
The only accessory that i can think of that could come in useful in a college dorm is a tv tuner card. My dorm room is so friggen tiny, theres no way i could fit in a tv.
