    Depends on your budget.

If you want to go nuts, get a Steiger Dynamics Couchmaster.

If you want to go cheap, go to Ikea, and buy yourself the finest $6 Ikea shelf or coffee table you can find. Because you deserve to treat yourself to the best.

Do an image search for lapdesk and you'll find a lot of ideas.

Something like this from IKEA http://www.ikea.com/gb/en/products/...top-support-flackarp-grey-black-art-40278246/
It's cheap and works just fine but imagine keeping a pillow on your lap for hours... hot. I still have one hidden in a closet I think.

Logitech makes several Lapdesk products. I got a N700 years ago, it has extra speakers and a cooling fan... and the padding lets air circulate in all the important bits too.
Here's a fan-less version https://www.amazon.com/Logitech-939-000305-Speaker-Lapdesk-N550/dp/B0043TV8QO - I especially like the padding, it won't block airflow but won't hurt legs either.
There's also ones with built-in mousepads or touchpads from Logitech but they don't seem to have padding underneath.

I've also used a shelf like above, it was just bigger (leftover from another project). A bit on the heavy side though. It's big enough to use mouse well though.

i was looking at the couchmaster but thought it was more for a keyboard than a full laptop

i need something i can fit a mouse on, so i guess im limited to something like a shelf but my laptop gets pretty warm gaming so maybe a shelf with holes for vents?
